Second half goals cost Ichabods in 3-1 loss to Bronchos

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn (9-4-2, 4-3-1) scored first but were unable to hold onto the lead in the second half against Central Oklahoma (10-2-3, 5-2-1) before ultimately falling 3-1.

Through the first 40 minutes of the game, neither team was able to put a goal on the board. The Ichabods had an early possession advantage and were able to limit the Bronchos to just one shot in the first half compared to seven in the first 45 minutes for Washburn.

On the seventh shot of the half, the Ichabods were able to get on the board. A corner kick late in the 43rd minute deflected off of three players just in front of the goal before Haley Rogers was able to shoot it into the bottom right corner, putting Washburn up 1-0 at the half.

In the 52nd minute, Madison Linavong scored the first goal for Central Oklahoma. She took a corner kick from the left corner and hooked the ball into the top right corner of the net for a goal. Just a minute later, Amaya Grace scored a second Bronchos' goal from straight on in front of the goal.

With less than 15 minutes remaining the Ichabods got more aggressive and played with one less defender to try and mount a comeback. They were able to take six shots in the second half but could not find the back of the net. Central Oklahoma took advantage of the thinner backline, allowing Amaya Grace to score her second goal of the day on a breakaway in the 88th minute.

Washburn ended the game with 10 shots on goal compared to just six for the Bronchos. Khloe Schuckman led the Ichabods with four shots and three shots on goal while playing all 90 minutes at forward. Jaedyn Johnson also had two shots at the goal.

Amaya Grace was the only Bronchos player with more than two shots, taking three, two of them were on target for goals. Monika McGee and Madison Linavong each picked up an assist on Grace's goals.

Both goalies played all 90 minutes. Caroline Faulkner came away with nine saves in the game for Central Oklahoma. Raegan Wells had three for Washburn, all coming in the second half.

With the 3-1 decision, the Ichabods have lost two games in a row for the first time all season. They will be back Sunday, Oct. 16 against Newman for the penultimate home game of the season with kickoff at 1 p.m.
