10/14/2022 9:10:00 PM

MOUNT BARRY, Ga. -- Sonia Smagina extended her stay in the ITA Cup with a three-set win to advance to a Saturday semifinal match in singles play.

For the first time in both ITA Regional and Cup play Smagina went to the third set in her match but she ultimately came out on top to become just the second Ichabod in women's program history to reach the ITA Cup semifinals.

Smagina and Eleonora Liga from Azusa Pacific University went back and forth in the first set before Smagina was able to pull out a 7-6(4) victory. The second set was controlled by Smagina early on until Liga reeled off four of the final six set points to win 7-6(3).

In the third set tiebreaker, Smagina jumped out to a 5-0 lead which was enough for her to secure a 6-3 set victory and a spot in the final four of all of division II singles play. Smagina will take on Elodia Busson from Hawaii Pacific University in the semifinals beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Smagina paired with Lara Schmid shortly after to continue in the West consolation bracket of doubles play. They took on Dana Heimen and Nadja Meier of Flagler College and came away with a three-set victory. After dropping the first set 6-2, they responded with 6-4 and 10-8 set victories, advancing to the West semifinals.

Tim Hammes and Sebastian Pjontek fell on the men's side of the West consolation bracket, losing in two sets, 6-0 and 6-1. They will drop down to the South bracket next.
