MOUNT BARRY, Ga. -- Sonia Smagina's ITA Cup run comes to an end after losing a three-set match to Deniz Khazan (Barry) in the finals.
Smagina started the first set in a 4-1 deficit before coming back to tie it at five. She went on to win the final two points and take the first set 7-5. In set two she fell behind early again, 3-0, but would come back again and tie it at three. Khazan was able to pull away after that and win 6-4 to even the match.
The third set was back-and-forth early on, neither Smagina nor Khazan had more than a one-point advantage through the first 12 points. In the tiebreaker, Khazan was able to pull away, winning the point 7-5 and the set 7-6(5).
Even with the run coming up just short, Smagina becomes just the second Washburn women's tennis player to advance to the finals of the ITA Cup, after becoming the second player to win in ITA Regionals.
With no doubles matches played, the Ichabods finished ITA Cup competition, and therefore all tournament play for the Fall. Next, they will take on William Jewell and Rockhurst with doubleheader matches in Kansas City on Oct. 22.
