Ichabods split Saturday matches with Cardinals and Hawks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Washburn women's tennis split a pair of Saturday matches against William Jewell and Rockhurst, winning 7-0 over the Cardinals and losing 4-3 to the Hawks.  

In game one against William Jewell, the Ichabods swept doubles play. At No. 1 Maja Jung and Casie Curry came away with a narrow 7-6(4) victory. Lara Schmid and Marta Torres claimed a 6-4 win over Gwyn Gifford and Julie Boershig at No. 2.  

Issabella Pensavalle and Maddie Shelley completed the sweep, beating Masie Markowitz and Elsie Crawford 6-1.  

Singles play began with a two-set victory from Casie Curry at No. 3 over Katie Boyd, winning 6-0 and 6-1. Maddie Shelley followed her from No. 5 with a pair of 6-1 victories over Julie Boerschig. Issabella Pensavalle matched Curry from the No. 6 position, defeating Elsie Crawford 6-1 and 6-0.  

Maja Jung secured a two-set victory from No. 1 over Gwyn Gifford with set scores of 6-0 and 6-3. Lara Schmid defeated Maisie Markowitz 6-2, 6-0 from No. 4. And Marta Torres completed the sweep, winning 6-2, 6-2 from No. 2.

In the afternoon against Rockhurst, Washburn got off to a strong start in doubles play. Jung and Curry defeated Dani Lentisco and Martyna Jankowska 6-3 at No. 1. Shelley and Pensavalle lost to Maria Chacon and Dina Dudic at the No. 3 position, 6-2.  

Torres and Schmid pulled out the win at No. 2, defeating Andrea Dabbah and Sofia Valdespino 6-3.  

Singles play started just as well, with a win at No. 2 by Maja Jung over Martyna Jankowska, 6-1, 6-2. Sofia Valdespino defeated Marta Torres at No. 1, 6-3 and 6-4. The Ichabods got within one point of winning after Casie Curry won over Maria Chacon 7-6(2), 6-3 at No. 3.  

Maddie Shelley lost to Andrea Dabbah 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Dani Lentisco in three sets at No. 5 6-2, 2-6 and 6-3 to tie the match. Issabella Pensavalle came up just short at No. 6, losing to Dina Dudic with set scores of 7-5, 3-6, and 6-4.  

Women's tennis is finished with its fall schedule and will be back on Jan. 28 in an exhibition against William Woods in Topeka.
