Washburn drops MIAA Tournament quarterfinals match to Northwest Missouri State, 3-0

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Three second-half goals were too much to overcome as Washburn fell 3-0 to Northwest Missouri State in the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon.

Through the first 45 minutes of the game, the Ichabods and Bearcats were both locked into a 0-0 tie game where neither team had been able to create significant separation in the first half.

Before halftime, it was Washburn who had an advantage in shots taken, at six to four. Khloe Schuckman accounted for all six of the Ichabods' shots in the first half, with five going on goal but were unable to find the net.

Less than a minute after halftime Hannah Stirling got the ball for Northwest Missouri State and was able to direct a shot from the left side of the field into the lower left corner of the goal. Adell Gore provided her with the assist on the game's first goal.

In the 58th minute, Gore was able to break loose herself and score another goal after getting an initial pass from Sophie Cissell, making it 2-0. Less than five minutes later Cissell drilled a shot from the right side of the net over and into the left corner for a third goal in the second half for the Bearcats.

Northwest Missouri State's defense tightened up down the stretch, allowing Washburn to attempt only three shots in the second half. On the other end, the Bearcats took 14 shots in the final 45 minutes, ending the game with an 18-9 advantage in that category.

Kaylie Rock and Adell Gore led Northwest Missouri with four shots each, four Bearcats finished the game with two attacks on target. In goal, Lily Ellis recorded six saves while playing all 90 minutes for Northwest Missouri.

Raegan Wells came up with a season-high 10 saves for the Ichabods, as she also played all 90 minutes. Carlee Thompson, Lakin Rold, Emily Michaelis and Khloe Schuckman also played the entire game for Washburn. Schuckman accounted for seven of the Ichabods' nine shots, with Haley Rogers and Brooke Powell taking the other two.

Washburn falls the Northwest Missouri State in the MIAA tournament for a second straight season, and lose in the MIAA Quarterfinals for a fourth consecutive season to finish 2022 with an 11-6-4 record.
