No. 12 Washburn picks up 3-1 win over Missouri Western

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Four Ichabods finished in double-figure kills and three recorded double-doubles as No. 12 Washburn defeated Missouri Western in four sets on Friday evening. Washburn will close out the three-match week hosting No. 23-ranked Central Missouri on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
The Ichabods won by the set scores of 18-25, 25-22, 25-11, and 25-15 to improve their record to 15-3 (7-3 MIAA).
 
The Washburn offense struggled finding its rhythm to begin the match as the Ichabods hit .065 with seven kills while Missouri Western knocked down 17 kills and had a .353 attacking percentage in the 25-18 first set win.
 
In the second set, Missouri Western (5-13, 2-8 MIAA) led 10-8 when a kill from Kealy Kiviniemi started a run of five unanswered points that pushed Washburn in front, 13-10. The Griffons scored the next two points and stayed within one or two points until tying up the set at 17, 18, and later at 22. Washburn broke the tie with three-straight kills from three different Ichabods to even the match with a 25-22 win. The Ichabods totaled 18 kills in the second frame.
 
Trailing 3-2 early in the third, Washburn rattled off an 11-2 run to go up, 13-5. A 6-0 run propelled the Ichabods to a 23-9 lead as they cruised to the 25-11 decision and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
There were six ties and two lead changes in the fourth game with neither team leading by more than three points until Washburn took control midway through. The Griffons led 14-12 when a Missouri Western attacking error gave the Ichabods the serve back and WU went on to score 13 of the final 14 points to complete the 3-1 victory.
 
Washburn closed out the night hitting .233 compared to Missouri Western's .139 attacking percentage. The Ichabods had the advantage over the Griffons in kills (56-44), blocks (8-5), and aces (6-5) while both teams had the same amount of digs at 89.
 
Jalyn Stevenson led all players with 14 kills and added 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. Halle Meister and Kiviniemi both hit above .300 and knocked down 12 kills each. Sophie McMullen had 10 kills and a match-high 21 digs and four service aces.
 
Corinna McMullen registered a career-high in both assists and digs, finishing with 39 assists and 17 digs for her team-high sixth double-double.
 
Danielle Moje led the Griffons with 13 kills. Setter Nessa Johnson had a double-double with 35 assists and 20 digs.
