WICHITA FALLS, Tex. -- Washburn women's tennis will be well represented in the final day of the Midwestern State Invitational after all three doubles teams and one singles player advanced through day one without a loss.
The Ichabods brought a total of seven singles players and three doubles teams to Wichita Falls, Tex. For the two-day tournament. Maja Jung led off singles competition in Flight A, sweeping her opponent in straight sets to advance to the semifinals. Also in Flight A, Marta Torres fell in two sets in her quarterfinals matchup.
In Flight B, Casie Curry also lost in two sets while Lara Schmid took her opponent to three sets but ultimately lost the tiebreaker. Flight C saw two quarterfinals wins, with Isabella Martensson winning her match in two sets, and Maddie Shelley taking out her opponent in a third set.
Issabella Pensavalle lost her opening round match in two sets in Flight D.
In the semifinals, Jung won two tightly contested sets to advance to Saturday's Flight A finals. In Flight C both Martensson and Shelley lost their semifinals matches in two sets.
In the consolation brackets, Torres lost her second match in three sets, as did Curry in Flight B. Schmid won her consolation bracket match after an opponent withdrew with Schmid up 3-0. Pensavalle had the same fate as Schmid, advancing to the finals of her consolation bracket in Flight D after her opponent withdrew with her leading.
In doubles play competing in Flight A, Jung and Curry advanced to day two with a 8-3 quarterfinals win. Torres and Martensson did the same, winning 8-4 also in Flight A. In flight B, Pensavalle and Shelley were able to follow suit with a 8-3 win, moving onto the semifinals.
Day two action will begin with singles play starting at 8:00 a.m. followed by doubles.
