Ichabods down Ottawa 71-66 for first win

TOPEKA, KAN. -- Washburn broke through for its first win of the season Monday night, using a strong second quarter to pull ahead of Ottawa University JV and win 71-66.

The victory came with a slow start for the Ichabods, as they trailed 18-13 after the first 10 minutes, with the Braves knocking down three 3-pointers in the first quarter to build the lead.

In the second quarter Washburn's defense picked up intensity, holding Ottawa to a 1-15 shooting performance (6.7%). Offensively, Riley Hett knocked down two 3-pointers and Raegan Wells scored five points in the frame to give the Ichabods a 27-24 lead at halftime.

After halftime Washburn was able to push the lead to double figures after four straight free throws by Bailey Collar. The lead stayed between 4-10 points the rest of the quarter, ending with the Ichabods up 49-43 after the Braves ended on a 4-0 run.

The offenses of both teams went back-and-forth in the fourth. First, Washburn built its lead to 13 points with 7:21 to play after an and-one from Collar. Ottawa went on two separate 6-0 runs from that point but each were put to a stop on layups from Collar. The Braves pulled within four before ultimately falling 71-66.

Bailey Collar led the Ichabods with 23 points and also added two steals. Raegan Wells exited early but finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Chloe Carter had three steals and two blocks to go along with a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. Riley Hett also had a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Ottawa had three players finish in double figures, led by Amaya Marlatt with 19 points.

Washburn defensively was able to hold the Braves to just 31.9% shooting, while forcing 17 turnovers compared to only 10 giveaways for the Ichabods. Washburn also knocked down three more 3-pointers than the visitors.

The Ichabods finish up the season on the road against Haskell Indian Nations University on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
