2/27/2022 3:05:00 PM

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The men's tennis team gets their second win of the weekend with a 4-3 victory over Drury. The Ichabods scored the first four points before giving up three to end the match.

Another strong doubles performance by the men's tennis team. Raul-Alin Dicu and Noah Neideck are on a hot streak as they have won their last four doubles matches together. Dicu and Neideck, at No. 2 doubles, won their match 6-1, making the duo 5-1 on the season. In the No. 1 spot, Matthew Earle and Sebastian Pjontek defeated their opponent 6-3 to give Washburn the 1-0 lead.

Miquel Perez and Daniel Bird are 7-2 as a duo this season after their 7-6 win at No. 3 doubles. It is the fourth time the Ichabods have swept doubles play.

In singles competition, Earle was one of two Ichabods to win their first set. His 6-3, 6-3 victory as fifth in the lineup gave Washburn the 2-0 lead. Every Washburn player who lost their first set forced a third after winning the second. Pjontek, at No. 3 singles, lost the first set, 6-4, then won the next two 6-3, 6-4.

Hammes also lost his first set but battled in sets two and three to grab the victory. He lost set one 6-3 then dominated in 6-1 set-two win. The third set came down to a tiebreaker to either win the match for the Ichabods or keep the match alive for the Panthers. Hammes edged out his opponent 7-6, making Washburn men's tennis 6-1 on the season.

The Panthers responded by winning the final three singles points with wins over Santiago Rendon, Perez and Dicu. Rendon lost set one, 4-6, then won a tough set two, 7-5. Unfortunately, Rendon fell short 3-6 in the third set. Perez lost the first set 6-3 and then quickly won set two, 6-1. In the third set, Perez went to a tiebreaker but would lose 7-6. Dicu was the third Ichabod to compete in a third-set tiebreaker. Dicu lost to No. 41 Sylvain Garin-Michaud, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Washburn stays on the road next weekend in Wichita Falls, Texas. The first match is on Friday, March 4, at 2 p.m. against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
