Women's Tennis Hosts No. 16 Augustana

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn returns home to play another ranked opponent in No. 12 Augustana on Tuesday, March 18 at the Topeka Country Club.
 

First Serve

  • The women's team lost to Azusa Pacific, 4-1 and Hawaii Pacific, 4-2
  • The Ichabods are 2-1 against Augustana and won the last two matches
  • Washburn last defeated the Vikings 4-2 back in May 2021 in the NCAA Central Regional
  • The Ichabods are 0-4 against ranked opponents

2022 Ichabods

  • Junior Svea Crohn has an overall singles record of 40-29 and a doubles record of 53-17. She is a four-time All-MIAA member, three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and received MIAA and ITA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2021
  • Crohn tied Washburn's single-season doubles winning percentage mark of .895 last season
  • Kinsey Fields has a career singles record of 17-11 and 39-17 doubles record in a little over 3 seasons. She has earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 2 doubles, MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was an MIAA Scholar-Athlete
  • Sydnee Foster in her third year holds a 9-6 singles record and 5-5 in doubles action. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll, an ITA Scholar-Athlete and earned the Academic Excellence award
  • Maja Jung is 25-5 overall in singles and 20-6 in doubles. She also earned All-MIAA Second Team at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles in 2021
  • Cadence Lynn is 20-16 in singles and 6-9 in doubles at Washburn. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and Scholar-Athlete
  • Isabella Martensson starts her Washburn career 6-4 in doubles and 4-8 singles record
  • Freshman Issabella Pensavalle comes from Jenks High School where she placed fourth in the state her freshman year. She is 3-2 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to begin her career
  • Freshman Lara Schmid transferred from St. Edward's University in Texas after the tennis program was eliminated in 2020. Schmid is 3-4 in singles play and 4-3 in doubles action as an Ichabod
  • Marta Torres has a 17-15 singles record, and a 20-9 doubles record in over two seasons. She was All-MIAA honorable mention at No. 6 singles and No. 1 doubles last season and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete

JUNG AND FIELDS

Last Match Recap

AZUSA, Calif. – The Ichabods (4-6) dropped Sunday's match against No. 7 Hawaii Pacific, 4-2. Washburn took the doubles point but suffered too many losses in singles play.

It did not start great in doubles play for the Ichabods. No. 1 doubles team, Isabella Martensson and Lara Schmid fell to their opponent, 6-1. However, the other two doubles teams won their matches to grab the doubles point.

Kinsey Fields and Maja Jung were the next to finish with a 6-4 victory.  The duo is 6-1 together this season. Their win gave Marta Torres and Svea Crohn a chance to win 7-5, putting the Ichabods up on Hawaii Pacific

In singles competition, Issabella Pensavalle in just her third start of the year dropped both her sets 6-0. Washburn quickly lost their lead when Torres lost in two sets, 6-3, 6-0, to No. 16 Shaline Pipa. The Ichabods were down to the Sharks 2-1.

The Ichabods fell further behind when Jung lost in two sets, 6-0, 6-2. Martensson got one back for Washburn with the game on the line. She started strong with a 6-1 first set win but was forced to a third set when she lost 6-2. The third set came down to a tiebreaker which Martensson won 7-3. Unfortunately, the match ended at No. 3 singles. Schmid battle in a 6-4 first set loss. The second set didn't go her way either, losing 6-1. 

Crohn won her first set 6-3 and was down 4-3 in the second before they called the match.

The Ichabods make their way home for another ranked opponent in No. 12 Augustana (SD). The match is on Friday, March 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Scouting the Vikings

  • The Vikings posted an 18-3 record last season and won the NSIC Tournament. their season ended with a loss to Washburn in the NCAA Central Regional. This season, the Vikings are 11-1 and 6-0 in the conference
  • Augustana lost two seniors but returned all six of their singles lineup and five of their six in doubles.
  • The Vikings lost Grace Goble who went 7-1 in singles and 15-3 in doubles with Laura Arce Vieyra
  • Vieyra returns after a 14-4 singles record and a 15-3 doubles record. Back at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles, she is 10-2 in singles and 10-2 in doubles
  • Vieyra's new partner freshmen, Gabriela Jancikova is 9-1 at the bottom of the singles lineup. She is the only new addition to the Vikings roster
  • Also returning, Valeriya Monko leads the team with 17 singles wins and 16 doubles wins. She is 9-3 at No. 1 singles and 10-2 at No. 1 doubles and ranked No. 50. Monko earned NSIC Freshman of the Year, Player of the Year, and First Team honors
  • Florentia Hadjigeorgiou went 15-2 in singles and was partners with Monko for their 16-4 record. She plays at No. 2 singles and is 10-0 in 2021-22 and currently ranked No. 44
  • Monko and Hadjigeorgiou are ranked No. 18 in doubles
  • The duo of Aleksandra Kistanova and Emily Granson at No. 3 doubles returns. They were 17-1 last season
  • Kistanova had a singles record of 14-2 last season and this season is 11-0
  • Granson went 9-2 last season in singles and is 4-3 in 2021-22
  • Margarita Choulari did not play doubles but was 13-3 last year. This season she is 4-0 at No. 4 singles and ranked No. 75

Vikings Head Coach Marc Kurtz

  • Mark Kurtz enters his 18th season as the head women's tennis coach
  • Kurtz has compiled a 252-49 record on the women's side
  • He has led the women to 11 straight undefeated seasons in NSIC play, including 10 straight NSIC Tournament Championships
  • The Vikings have won 129 straight regular-season NSIC matches
  • Under Kurtz, Augustana has surpassed 20 wins on four occasions
  • In 2011, Kurtz took the Vikings to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time in school history
  • In addition to coaching at Augustana, He is the tennis director at GreatLife Center in Sioux Falls
  • He is a member of the Sioux Falls Tennis Association Board, and on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Region ranking committee for women
  • Kurtz earned four letters in tennis in the top three singles positions and top two doubles for Montana State University-Billings

 Ichabods in the Rankings

  • The Ichabods dropped out of the ITA DII Women's National Team Rankings, released on March 10
  • Kinsey Fields and Maja Jung moved into the ITA National Doubles Rankings at No. 29
