Washburn drops series opener at Missouri Southern in extra innings

JOPLIN, Mo. – Washburn baseball took the lead in the top of the 10th, but Missouri Southern put up two runs in the home half of the frame to complete its comeback in the series opener on Saturday afternoon, 10-9. Game two of the series will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
 
Washburn (17-7, 8-3 MIAA) jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the second inning. Leading off the frame was Brett Ingram, who reached on a fielding error and moved up to second on Zion Bowlin's single. Connor Scott kept things going with a single of his own that scored Ingram. Kros Bay recorded an RBI groundout and Trevor McCollum reached first safely on another fielding error that allowed Scott to score Washburn's third run of the inning.
 
The Ichabods doubled their lead in the top of the third. Parker Dunn drew a leadoff walk and Ingram followed with a single through the left side. On the second pitch of his at bat, Bowlin cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the fence in right center.
 
Missouri Southern (16-9, 7-4 MIAA) got on the board in the home half of the third after a leadoff walk eventually came around to score on a single to make it a 6-1 contest.
 
Cal Watkins led off the fourth inning with a double to right field and moved up to third on a ground out. Ingram brought him home with a single to center field to push Washburn's lead back to six.
 
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, the Lions cut Washburn's lead to 7-3 after back-to-back solo home runs.
 
For the fourth-straight inning, Washburn's leadoff batter reached base as Bay got things going with a single to right field. McCollum was hit by the pitch and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Cale Savage. Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli recorded an RBI with a groundout that scored Bay for the Ichabods' eighth run of the game.
 
Missouri Southern scored one in the bottom of the fifth and then pulled within one of Washburn at 8-7 after putting up three runs in the eighth. Joel Casillas took over on the mound with one out and the bases loaded, and after issuing a walk, he closed out the inning with an infield fly out and a strikeout.
 
Washburn had an opportunity to add an insurance run in the ninth as Ingram hit a leadoff triple, but he was left stranded at third.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, the Lions' leadoff man was hit by the pitch and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt before scoring the tying run on a single. Wyatt Hardy entered the game and left two runners on base as he got two fly outs to send the game to extras.
 
The Ichabods showed patience at the plate and worked deep counts in their at bats in the top of the 10th. On the seventh pitch of his at bat, McCollum led off with a single through the left side and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Cale Savage drew a walk and with one out, Watkins also worked a six pitch walk to load the bases for Parker Dunn, who broke the tie game with a sacrifice fly to right.
 
After getting the first out on the first pitch in the bottom of the inning, the Lions leveled the score with a home run. The following batter was walked and then stole second before Treghan Parker sent a single through the right side to capture the walk off win.
 
Ingram led Washburn with three hits and added two runs and an RBI. Bowlin was 2-5 and collected three RBI on his fifth home run of the season and he also scored twice. Bay and Watkins also landed two hits in the game and scored one run apiece.
