Washburn women tennis ready to face Rockhurst on Tuesday

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn women's tennis is set to face Rockhurst on Tuesday, March 29 at the Washburn Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.

First Serve

  • The women's team won both conference matches over the weekend against No. 25 Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays. Washburn lost to Southwest Baptist on Friday
  • Washburn recorded its third sweep of the season with a 7-0 win over the Tigers
  • The women's team is tied with Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western at the top of the MIAA standings
  • The Ichabods are 19-11 when facing Rockhurst. Washburn defeated the Hawks last season, 7-0
  • The Ichabods scrimmaged the Hawks back in October
  • This match was moved from February 5 to March 30
  • The Ichabod women's tennis team is 9-1 in the conference in the last two seasons

2022 Ichabods

  • Junior Svea Crohn has an overall singles record of 41-31 and a doubles record of 56-17. She is a four-time All-MIAA member, three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and received MIAA and ITA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2021
  • Crohn tied Washburn's single-season doubles winning percentage mark of .895 last season
  • Kinsey Fields has a career singles record of 18-11 and 41-19 doubles record in a little over 3 seasons. She has earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 2 doubles, MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was an MIAA Scholar-Athlete
  • Sydnee Foster in her third year holds a 9-6 singles record and 6-5 in doubles action. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll, an ITA Scholar-Athlete and earned the Academic Excellence award
  • Maja Jung is 28-6 overall in singles and 22-8 in doubles. She also earned All-MIAA Second Team at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles in 2021
  • Cadence Lynn is 23-17 in singles and 7-9 in doubles at Washburn. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and Scholar-Athlete
  • Isabella Martensson starts her Washburn career 8-6 in doubles and 4-11 singles record
  • Freshman Issabella Pensavalle comes from Jenks High School where she placed fourth in the state her freshman year. She is 4-2 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to begin her career
  • Freshman Lara Schmid transferred from St. Edward's University in Texas after the tennis program was eliminated in 2020. Schmid is 4-6 in singles play and 6-5 in doubles action as an Ichabod
  • Marta Torres has a 20-16 singles record, and a 23-9 doubles record in over two seasons. She was All-MIAA honorable mention at No. 6 singles and No. 1 doubles last season and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete

Last Match Recap

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod women's tennis team moved to 2-0 in the MIAA and 6-8 overall after a 7-0 sweep over Fort Hays State on Sunday at the Washburn Tennis Complex for its 23rd win in a row over the Tigers dating back to April 14, 1997.

The Ichabods started out the match winning all three doubles matches as the No. 2 team of Maja Jung and Kinsey Fields picked up a 6-0 win over Nicole Heyn and Fiorella Mendez. At No. 1 doubles Lara Schmid and Isabella Martensson topped Irina Alfonso and Maria Paz Diaz won 6-3 and Sydnee Foster and Cadence Lynn won their match at No. 3 doubles 6-3 over Kylie Auftengarten and Aliyah Frederick.

In singles play, Marta Torres rolled to a 7-5, 6-3 win over Alfonso at No. 1 singles while Jung at No. 2 and Svea Crohn at No. 3 gave up only one game in their matches as Jung topped Paz Diaz 6-1, 6-0 and Crohn won 6-0, 6-1.

Fields picked up a 6-2, 7-6 win over Mendez at No. 4 singles while Lynn won her match at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-2 over Frederick. At No. 6 singles Issabella Pensavalle topped Auftengarten 6-4, 6-2.

The Ichabods will be back in action taking on Southern Arkansas and Harding on April 2 and April 3 in Bolivar, Mo.

Scouting the Hawks

  • The Hawks posted a 5-7 season in 2020-21 and are 4-4 to start this season
  • Rockhurst lost four seniors but brought back three players and added six freshmen and one senior transfer
  • Sam Czarnecki is one of those seniors that did not return. Czarnecki led the team with 7 singles wins and six doubles wins
  • Paula Romero and Mary Grace Harris combined for a singles record of 8-14 and a doubles record of 6-13
  • The Hawks brought back Dina Dudic who went 6-6 in singles and 7-5 in doubles. Dudic is 3-5 in singles and 4-4 in doubles
  • Senior transfer Valentine Limauge went 4-7 in singles and 2-6 in doubles last season with Gardner-Webb. She is 6-2 mostly at No. 1 singles and 6-3 in doubles this season
  • The Hawks' freshmen have helped the team improve this season
  • Starting with Martyna Jankowska with her 7-1 singles record and a 6-3 doubles record
  • Dani Lentisco is 6-2 in singles and 3-6 in doubles
  • Rockhurst has used eight different combinations for doubles play

Hawks Head Coach Jamie McDonald

  • Jamie McDonald enters his second spring season as the head women's tennis coach
  • He graduated from Denison (Ohio) University with a double major in psychology and political science in 2018
  • McDonald was a three-time All-Conference honoree and team-captain in his senior year. He was also named to the ITA Scholar-Athlete Team four years in a row
  • He previously served as a volunteer coach at Denison and head coach at Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, Mo.

 Ichabods in the Rankings

  • The Ichabods dropped out of the ITA DII Women's National Team Rankings, released on March 10
  • Torres is ranked No. 6 in the Central Region

Looking Ahead

The Ichabods travel to Bolivar, Mo. for two ranked matches against Southern Arkansas and Harding. Washburn plays SAU on April 2 at 3 p.m.
