TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod pitchers tossed a pair of shutouts and the offense pounded out 21 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Missouri S&T improving its winning streak to 14 games on Saturday afternoon at Gahnstrom Field. Washburn moves to 16-6 on the season and with the two wins today, Ichabod softball head coach
Brenda Holaday earned her 500
th career coaching win. Washburn is back in action on Sunday facing Truman starting at 2 p.m.
Game 1 – Washburn 8, Missouri S&T 0 (5 innings)
The Ichabods jumped on the board first with a solo run in the bottom of the inning when
Hadley Kerschen doubled and then came around to score on a double by
Jaycee Ginter. Another solo run for the Ichabods came in the second inning when
Jenna Moore sent one over the center field fence for her first home run of the season as Washburn went up 2-0.
The Ichabods put up a crooked number in the third inning with a triple by
Marrit Mead followed by
Autymn Schreiner getting hit by a pitch and then both scored on Kerschen's second double of the game. Kerschen would later score on a single by
Kimi Patterson as Washburn led 5-0.
After going scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings,
Hailey Neira singled and then after Mead walked,
Kaylee Wagner singled up the middle and then a ground out by Kerschen drove in a run and then
Ashton Friend singled sending Schreiner home with the eighth run of the game for the run-rule win.
Ginter tossed a six-inning shutout scattering five hits and striking out five improving to 11-1 on the season. Kerschen finished with 3 RBI.
Game 2 – Washburn 8, Missouri S&T 0 (6 innings)
Unlike the first game, Washburn did not score until the bottom of the fourth breaking a scoreless tie when Friend hit her eighth home run of the season following a Kerschen single as the Ichabods took a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Washburn scored three runs on an RBI double by Head and then a 2-RBI double by Kerschen scored Mead and Patterson pushing the run total to eight for another victory.
Raegen Hamm picked up the win striking out two improving to 5-3 on the season. Kerschen drove in two more runs in the game and Friend and
Paige Robbins also drove in two.
