Washburn baseball grounds Jets in series sweep

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Ichabods completed their second-consecutive MIAA sweep as they defeated Newman 8-5 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. Washburn has now won eight in a row and 14 of its last 15 games.

For the first time in the series, it was Newman (11-7, 2-4 MIAA) that scored first as the Jets scored twice in the first inning and then added another couple in the second to lead 4-0.

The Ichabods (15-4, 6-0 MIAA) got on the board in the top of the third after a fielder's choice and an infield single set Parker Dunn up for a two-RBI double to left center to cut Newman's lead in half, 4-2.

Washburn took the lead in the top of the fifth scoring four runs on three hits with two errors in the frame. Teagan Tamiya and Easton Bruce led off the inning with back-to-back singles and then both scored when Cal Watkins reached safely on an error and ended up at third base. Watkins easily scored on Dunn's RBI single to left center to put the Ichabods up, 5-4. Up next was Brett Ingram, who reached safely on an error by the second baseman and Dunn moved up to third. Although the Ichabods hit into a double play, Dunn was able to score on the play to push Washburn's lead to 6-4.

Newman got one run back in the home half of the inning after an error and a hit.

With one out in the seventh, Cale Savage drew a walk and then stole second to get into scoring position. Kros Bay's single moved Savage up to third and Quinn Waterbury's fielder's choice brought in a run to add a little cushion to the Ichabods' lead, 7-5.

Washburn added one final run in the eighth. Watkins singled to the short stop and advanced to second on a passed ball and moved up to third on a groundout. Ingram hit a single to left field to collect an RBI.

On the mound, Charlie Kiefer retired the Jets in order in the eighth and worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to close out the game and secure the sweep.

At the top of the lineup, Bruce was 3-5 at the dish and scored twice. Watkins landed two hits and scored three times. Dunn also had a pair of hits and drove in three runs.

Washburn starter Jack Brimacombe (1-1) earned the win going five innings and allowing five runs, four of which were earned, and eight hits. He also recorded five strikeouts. Keifer pitched four scoreless innings in relief and received the save and allowed just one single in the seventh. He had four strikeouts on the day.

The Ichabods remain on the road and will take on Northeastern State for three games in Tahlequah, Okla., March 11-13.
