TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods returned to Gahnstrom Field for the first time since March 6 sweeping Missouri Western in the process with an 8-1 and a 6-5 win over the Griffons to remain undefeated at home at 16-0. Washburn will look to keep the streak going hosting Northwest Missouri at 1 p.m. on Saturday in another MIAA doubleheader.
Game 1 - WU 8, MWSU 1
Washburn broke open a scoreless tie pushing across three runs in the bottom of the third when
Jenna Moore drew a lead-off walk and then moved to second on a sac bunt by
Maddie Stipsits. A two-out single by
Paige Robbins up the middle scored Moore and
Jaycee Ginter followed with a RBI double of her own scoring Robbins put the Ichabods up 3-0.
In the fifth, the Ichabods scored a solo run on an RBI single by
Ashton Friend with two outs scoring Robbins who singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Missouri Western (14-16, 5-5 MIAA) got on the board with a single run in the top of the sixth, but the Ichabods came back with four more as
Autymn Schreiner singled to start things off and a single by
Marrit Mead and a walk by Robbins loaded the bases setting up a 3-RBI double by Ginter as Washburn (26-11, 8-2 MIAA) went up 7-1 and then Ginter scored on an RBI single by Friend wrapping up the Ichabod offense with an 8-1 win.
It was a big opening game for Ginter as she moved to 18-3 on the season striking out 13 giving her 183 after game one setting a single season strikeout record at Washburn. Ginter finished 2 for 4 at the plate with 4 RBI and scattered two hits allowing one run in the circle.
Robbins was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI and Friend was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI.
Game 2 - WU 6, MWSU 5
In the nightcap, Washburn was down 1-0 after the Griffons jumped on the board in their first at bat but the lead was short-lived as the Ichabods scored four times taking advantage of a Griffon error to go up 4-1. Mead singled and then stole second and then came around to score on Robbins' single to left. Robbins would score on a wild pitch and then after the Western miscue, Schreiner doubled to left sending
Kimi Patterson and
Hadley Kerschen home.
Washburn platted a single run in the second when Moore singled and then scored after back-to-back singles by Robbins and Ginter as Ginter's single to right scored Moore.
Missouri Western scored four times in the fourth inning sending nine batters to the plate, but the Ichabods retook the lead with a two-out triple by Ginter sending Robbins home who singled for the go ahead run.
Raegen Hamm tossed 2 1/3 innings relieving starter
Ashlie Thissen as Hamm improved to 7-6 in the circle. Ginter pitched the final 1 1/3 innings striking out two more for her first save of the season.
Washburn's 11-hit attack was led by Robbins and Ginter who each had four hits in the game.
For the two-game series, Robbins was 7 for 7 with five runs scored and a walk with 2 RBI reaching base in all eight plate appearances. Ginter was 6 for 8 with two doubles, a triple, 6 RBI and two runs scored along with a 1.250 slugging percentage. In the circle, Ginter had a 0.84 earned run average holding Griffon batters to a .074 batting average.
