No. 66 Ichabods travel to No. 57 Missouri Western on Tuesday

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Washburn heads to St. Joseph for a conference match against Missouri Western at 1 p.m.

First Serve

  • The women's team stayed undefeated (3-0) in the conference after taking down No. 41 Northwest Missouri State, 4-3
  • The women's team is tied with Central Oklahoma at the top of the MIAA standings
  • The Ichabods have controlled the all-time series with a 29-2 record when facing the Griffons and have a 15-1 road record
  • Washburn's won the last five match-ups all by three points or more
  • The Ichabod women's tennis team is 10-1 in the conference in the last two seasons

2022 Ichabods

  • Junior Svea Crohn has an overall singles record of 43-33 and a doubles record of 60-17. She is a four-time All-MIAA member, three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and received MIAA and ITA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2021
  • Crohn tied Washburn's single-season doubles winning percentage mark of .895 last season
  • Kinsey Fields has a career singles record of 18-11 and 42-20 doubles record in three seasons. She has earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 2 doubles, MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was an MIAA Scholar-Athlete
  • Sydnee Foster in her third year holds a 9-6 singles record and 6-5 in doubles action. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll, an ITA Scholar-Athlete and earned the Academic Excellence award
  • Maja Jung is 31-7 overall in singles and 23-9 in doubles. She also earned All-MIAA Second Team at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles in 2021
  • Cadence Lynn is 25-19 in singles and 7-9 in doubles at Washburn. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and Scholar-Athlete
  • Isabella Martensson starts her Washburn career 12-6 in doubles play
  • Freshman Issabella Pensavalle comes from Jenks High School where she placed fourth in the state her freshman year. She is 4-2 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to begin her career
  • St. Edwards transfer Lara Schmid is 8-6 in singles play and 10-5 in doubles action as an Ichabod
  • Marta Torres has a 23-17 singles record, and a 27-9 doubles record in less than two seasons. She was All-MIAA honorable mention at No. 6 singles and No. 1 doubles last season and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete

CONFERENCE SLATE

  • The Ichabods' final six matches are against conference opponents

BELLA AND LARA

Last Match Recap

MARYVILLE, Mo. – No. 66 Washburn women's tennis remains unbeaten in the conference after a 4-3 win at No. 41 Northwest Missouri. The Ichabods have won the last three matches against the Bearcats.

Northwest Missouri (12-7) took the early advantage in doubles play with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. The Ichabods (9-9) made it interesting when Marta Torres and Svea Crohn topped Julia Aliseda and Sofia Pignataro, 6-2. Torres and Crohn won their 11th straight doubles match at No. 3 doubles.

No. 38 Isabella Martensson and Lara Schmid earned their first win as a ranked doubles team, defeating Alexandra Dodashev and Carolina Lima de Oliveira, 6-3. Washburn took the early 1-0 lead.

In singles play, Torres extended the Ichabods' lead by winning in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, over Vera Alenicheva in the first position. The Bearcats tied the contest with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

In the fourth spot, Martensson retook the Washburn lead with a straight-set victory over Pignataro, 6-2, 6-4. Schmid then clinched the Washburn win with her straight-set victory, 7-5, 6-2. 

The Ichabods' conference slate continues at Missouri Western on Tuesday, April 12, at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Griffons

  • No. 57 Missouri Western surpassed its 2020-21 win total with its win over Northeastern State. The Griffons are 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the MIAA
  • The Griffons eight of ten players and added two transfers and a freshman
  • Missouri Western lost Karolina Strom after a 10-5 singles and 9-7 doubles year. She earned All-MIAA Second Team at No. 2 singles in 2021. Strom is also the Griffins' all-time leader in singles wins (58) and doubles wins (56)
  • The Griffons did bring back three players with double-digit singles wins and three with 10-plus doubles wins
  • Sophomore Anya Chavez went led the team last year with a 14-3 singles record and a 13-4 doubles record. This year, Chavez is 8-5 from No. 1 singles and 9-4 from No. 1 doubles
  • Chavez's doubles partner, Isabella MacGibbon, returns and is 8-4 in singles
  • Junior Claudia Iglesias had a great last year but is having a better 2021-22. Iglesias is 11-1 mostly from No. 5 singles and 9-4 in doubles with transfer Esther Guemes
  • Senior Ioanna Lathouri has missed most of the season with an injury but since coming back is 2-0 at No. 5 singles and 4-0 at No. 3 doubles
  • The Griffins' two transfer have combined for a 25-2 in singles and 18-5 in doubles
  • Christan Brothers transfer Guemes is undefeated (13-0) in the two spot and 9-4 with Iglesias in doubles. She also played for East Tennessee State during her freshman and sophomore years
  • Sophomore transfers Anais Peralta Criado came from South Carolina State. The Bulldogs won the MEAC while she was on the roster. As a Griffin, Criado is 11-1 in singles and 9-1 at No. 3 doubles

Griffons Head Coach Alejandro De la Torre

  • Alejandro De la Torre is in his first season as head women's tennis coach at Missouri Western
  • De la Torre comes to St. Joseph after two seasons at NCAA DII St. Mary's (TX), where he served as a graduate assistant coach in 2020 and full-time assistant coach in 2021
  • During his time there, he helped the women's team to a top-15 ranking and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance, while assisting the men in achieving their top-25 ITA ranking as an NCAA South Central Regionals finalist in 2021
  • The native of Madrid, played collegiate tennis at DII North Greenville (SC), playing in the number one spot for the Crusaders
  • De la Torre also serves as a coach for the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Florida and the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain

 Ichabods in the Rankings

  • The Ichabods returned to the ITA National Team Rankings top-75 at No. 66
  • Torres is ranked No. 6 in the Central Region
  • Fields and Jung fell out of the ITA Doubles Rankings. However, Martensson and Schmid made their first appearance at No. 38

The Ichabods travel to No. 73 Newman for a conference match on Thursday, April 14, starting at 1 p.m.
