No. 66 Ichabods head to No. 73 Newman on Thursday

WICHITA, Kan. -- Washburn travels to No. 73 Newman on Thursday, April 14, starting at 1 p.m.

First Serve

  • The women's team stayed undefeated (4-0) in the conference after taking down No. 57 Missouri Western, 5-2
  • The women's team is tied with Central Oklahoma at the top of the MIAA standings
  • The Ichabods have controlled the all-time series with an 8-2 record when facing the Jets
  • It is Washburn's third road match against Newman

2022 Ichabods

  • Junior Svea Crohn has an overall singles record of 44-33 and a doubles record of 60-18. She is a four-time All-MIAA member, three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and received MIAA and ITA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2021
  • Crohn tied Washburn's single-season doubles winning percentage mark of .895 last season
  • Kinsey Fields has a career singles record of 18-11 and 42-20 doubles record in three seasons. She has earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 2 doubles, MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was an MIAA Scholar-Athlete
  • Sydnee Foster in her third year holds a 9-6 singles record and 6-5 in doubles action. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll, an ITA Scholar-Athlete and earned the Academic Excellence award
  • Maja Jung is 31-8 overall in singles and 24-9 in doubles. She also earned All-MIAA Second Team at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles in 2021
  • Cadence Lynn is 26-19 in singles and 7-9 in doubles at Washburn. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and Scholar-Athlete
  • Isabella Martensson starts her Washburn career 13-6 in doubles play
  • Freshman Issabella Pensavalle comes from Jenks High School, where she placed fourth in the state her freshman year. She is 4-2 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to begin her career
  • St. Edward's transfer Lara Schmid is 9-6 in singles play and 11-5 in doubles action as an Ichabod
  • Marta Torres has a 24-17 singles record, and a 27-10 doubles record in less than two seasons. She was All-MIAA honorable mention at No. 6 singles and No. 1 doubles last season and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete

CONFERENCE SLATE

Last Match Recap

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Ichabods stay undefeated in conference play with a 5-2 win at No. 57 Missouri Western. Washburn women's tennis moved to 4-0 in the MIAA.

In doubles competition, Isabella Martensson and Lara Schmid topped Anya Chavez and Isabella MacGibbon, 6-4, for their sixth straight doubles win. The Griffins (13-4) evened it with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

The doubles point came down to the No. 2 doubles match. Maja Jung and Kinsey Fields' 6-4 victory clinched Washburn's fifth straight doubles point.

Marta Torres bounced back in a strong, 6-3, 6-1 performance over Chavez in the first position. Missouri Western, down 2-0, won in straight sets at No. 4 singles. SveaCrohn pushed the Washburn (10-9) lead back up to two by defeating MacGibbons, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, in the third spot. The Griffons fought back with another straight-set victory at No. 2 singles.

Schmid earned the deciding point against IoannaLathouri with a 6-3, 7-5, victory at No. 5 singles. Schmid extends her singles win streak to six matches. At the bottom of the lineup, Cadence Lynn won her first set 6-3, then lost the second set 6-4. Since Washburn had secured the victory, Cadence Lynn played in a third-set super tiebreaker which she narrowly passed Iglesias, Claudia, 11-9, for the win.

The Ichabod women's team heads to Wichita, Kan., to play Newman on Thursday, April 14, starting at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Jets

  • No. 73 Newman is 12-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Its 12-8 record is Newman's highest win percentage since 2015-16
  • The Jets returned six of their eight players for the 2020-21 season, losing senior Emily Young and freshman Maria Clara Rodrigues
  • Senior Isabella Campos Bifano plays mostly at No.2 or No. 3 singles. Senior Mirella D'angelo Cavalcanti has performed well from the bottom of the lineup
  • Bifano and incoming freshman Dana Issabayeva are 11-1 in DII doubles and ranked  No. 40 in the ITA Doubles Rankings
  • As a freshman, Issabayeva has taken over the first position and has over 10 wins in singles. She also earned MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on February 16
  • Wichita State transfer, Amber Hands, has also had a breakout season with double-digit singles wins.

Jets Head Coach Shella Augspurger

  • Shella Augspurger is in her 18th season with the Newman tennis program in 2021-22. It is her 16th year after beginning in the spring of 2006, and she took over as Director of Tennis before the 2007-08 season
  • Augspurger has led the men's and women's teams to a combined 21 trips to the Heartland Conference tournament out of 23 chances
  • She taught tennis for over 20 years, beginning at multiple clubs in St. Louis, Missouri area
  • Since moving to Wichita in 1999, she has been a teaching pro at Reflection Ridge Golf and Swim Club and coached the Maize High School boy's tennis team for four years
  • Augspurger played three different sports at the University of Kentucky
  • Her son Derrick played volleyball for Kentucky, and her daughter played volleyball at Wichita State

 Ichabods in the Rankings

  • The Ichabods returned to the ITA National Team Rankings top-75 at No. 66
  • Torres is ranked No. 6 in the Central Region
  • Fields and Jung fell out of the ITA Doubles Rankings. However, Martensson and Schmid made their first appearance at No. 38

Looking Ahead

The Ichabods compete in their final road game of the season at Emporia State on Saturday, April 16, starting at noon.
