EMPORIA, Kan. – Washburn baseball lost 5-1 on Friday in game two of the three-game set at Emporia State. Saturday's series-deciding game will begin at 1 p.m. in Emporia.
The Hornets (16-24, 10-16 MIAA) broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the third with two runs after a balk and a bases loaded walk.
Emporia State extended its lead with three runs on four hits in the fifth inning to go up 5-0.
The Hornets' pitching struggled with control in the seventh inning and allowed the Ichabods (26-24, 16-10 MIAA) to score.
Cal Watkins led off with a five pitch walk and
Trevor McCollum reached base on a fielder's choice before advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch.
Kros Bay got a single through the left side to move McCollum up to third, who later scored on another wild pitch.
The Ichabods had a runner in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to push another run across as the Hornets held on for the win.
The Hornets had an 8-6 advantage in hits over the Ichabods.
Connor Scott led the Ichabods with two hits and finished the night 2-4 at the dish. McCollum had a hit and scored Washburn's lone run.
Jack Brimacombe (2-3) received the loss after throwing four innings and allowing three runs on four hits and four walks and striking out three.
Julian Zamora worked two scoreless innings in relief and gave up one hit and one walk to go with three strikeouts.
