Ichabods fall in MIAA Tournament Championship game, await NCAA postseason bid Monday morning

EDMOND, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team fell in the MIAA Tournament Championship game 4-2 as Rogers State connected on a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday in Edmond, Okla. The Ichabods will discover their NCAA postseason fate at 9 a.m. on Monday morning.

Rogers State, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, jumped on the board in the bottom of the third on a home run by Kimberli Presneli to left center breaking the scoreless tie.

However the lead was short-lived as the Ichabods (45-13) came back in the top of the fourth tying the score at 1-1. Jaycee Ginter doubled to left and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Ashton Friend connected on a sac fly to right and Ginter beat the throw home.

Washburn took the lead in the top of the sixth at 2-1 when Marrit Mead singled to right center and then swiped second. After Paige Robbins drew a walk, Ginter drove in Mead with a single up the middle.

After the Hillcats (47-9) went scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, a lead-off home run by Makayla Bowman tied the score at 2-2.

In the top of the eighth, Washburn had two out singles by Robbins and Ginter, a strikeout ended the threat.

The Ichabods retired the first two Hillcat batters in the ninth on a foul out and a strikeout, but a single by Presneli set up the walk-off from Chelsea Spain for the 4-2 win.

Ginter led the Ichabods with three hits as Washburn finished with six overall. In the circle she fell to 30-5 on the season striking out four.

Andrea Morales struck out 11 Ichabods improving to 30-3 on the season.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Jaycee Ginter, Marrit Mead, Jaden LaBarge and Paige Robbins were all named to the MIAA All-Tournament team.
