EMPORIA, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Washburn volleyball team continued its winning ways on Tuesday evening with a 3-0 victory at Emporia State. The Ichabods will return to Topeka on Saturday to take on No. 13 Northwest Missouri at 6 p.m.
The Ichabods (11-0, 3-0 MIAA) won by the set scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-17 to capture their sixth sweep of the season.
Washburn started the match slowly as Emporia State (3-8, 1-2 MIAA) jumped out to an 11-5 lead. The Ichabods closed the gap with a 6-2 run to pull within two at 13-11. The Hornets won the following point before Washburn rattled off the next nine points in a row to take its first lead since 3-2 and closed out the 25-16 win by scoring 14 of the final 16 points.
Corinna McMullen started off the second frame with a service ace and the Ichabods never trailed in the set. Washburn ended the 25-15 set victory on a 3-0 mini-run with kills from
Bella Limback,
Samantha Moburg, and
Austin Broadie.
The Hornets led 5-2 in the third set when the Ichabods pushed in front with a 4-0 run. Emporia State continued to fight back and tied the score six times before nudging past at 13-12. A kill from
Iyannah Jackson sparked an 8-2 run that included three service aces to create some space for Washburn at 20-15. Washburn finished strong and won the last four points consecutively to secure the 25-17 set win and the shutout. The Ichabod offense hit a collective .517. with 16 kills and five aces in the final set.
Washburn finished the match with a .361 attacking percentage and held Emporia State to a .163 clip. The Ichabods had the advantage in kills (42-35), aces (10-3), and blocks (5-1).
Eleven Ichabods recorded at least one kill in the match and were paced by Broadie's 10 kills and .500 hitting percentage.
Jalyn Stevenson registered nine kills and
Halle Meister added eight kills on 12 swings with zero errors for a .667 attacking percentage. C. McMullen had 19 assists and
Sophie McMullen had a team-high 14 digs.
Emporia State's Winny Harris hit .636 and had a team-best eight kills.
