EDMOND Okla. -- Washburn women's tennis began its fall season Friday at ITA Regionals in Edmond, Okla. where three players advanced to day two in singles play and all four doubles pairs moved on into the round of 16.  

The Ichabods had six players competing in singles competition which began at 8:00 a.m. and continued throughout the day. Sixty-four players began the day and after two rounds of play 16 were left.  

Sonia Smagina, Maja Jung, Marta Torres and Casie Curry each advanced through the first round. Smagina, Curry and Torres won in straight sets while Jung dropped the opening set before winning the final two.  

Lara Schmid and Isabella Martensson both lost opening-round matches. In the round of 32 Jung and Smagina both won in two sets while Torres lost both sets in tiebreakers. Curry dropped the second set but won a third set tiebreaker to advance into day two.  

On the doubles side Washburn had three teams competing out of the 32-team field, and another in the Main Draw B side. When the day was done all four teams had played their way into the second day.  

Sonia Smagina and Lara Schmid won 8-4 in the opening round, as did Marta Torres and Isabella Martensson. Casie Curry and Maja Jung stayed perfect on the day with an 8-2 victory. Competing in the Main Draw B bracket, Maddie Shelley and Issabella Pensavalle won an 8-3 match to move into the round of 16.  

All eight players will be back in action in either singles or doubles play beginning at 8 p.m. Sept. 24.
