EDMOND Okla. -- Washburn tennis wrapped up the ITA Regional tournament on both the men's and women's side with one championship as Sonia Smagina won the women's singles title, the second women's title in program history.
Smagina won both her quarterfinals and championship matchup in straight sets, never dropping more than three set points to claim the title. In all six rounds she won a combined 73 set points while only losing 22. The last and only other time in women's program history that Washburn had a singles champion at the ITA Regionals tournament was in 2016 when Madeline Hill won. With the win she advances to the ITA Cup which will be played in Rome GA beginning Oct. 13.
In doubles play Smagina and Lara Schmid faced off with Marta Torres and Isabella Martensson in the semifinals match. Smagina and Schmid took a 8-4 victory over the other Ichabod team to advance to the finals. In the championship match the pair lost both sets to come up just short of a doubles championship.
On the men's side the pairing of Tim Hammes and Sebastian Pjontek blew past their top-seeded semifinals opponents, winning 8-1. In the finals they split the first two sets before falling in the 10-point third set tiebreaker, 10-8.
In all three days of the tournament Washburn teams collected 18 singles match victories and 15 doubles wins between the men and women.
