Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon win ITA Cup Doubles National Championship

10/14/2023 9:33:00 PM

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- For the first time in program history, Washburn men's tennis has a national champion with Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon completing a dominant four round run on Saturday night to win the ITA Cup Doubles Championship.

Rendon and Hammes didn't drop a set through the last two rounds on their way to the first national championship of any kind for Washburn athletics since Madeline Hill won the ITA Cup women's singles championship in 2016.

The duo started the day in the semifinals winning 6-4 in the first set against Phil Exner and Alex Blanchar of Ouachita Baptist. They finished off the match in the same fashion with another 6-4 win to punch their ticket into the 6:30 CST national championship match.

Rendon and Hammes, who finished the 2022-23 season ranked No. 17 nationally in doubles, kept rolling in the championship match with a swift 6-2 first set win over Cas de Ruiter and Toedor Zlatar from Harding University. They were not going to be denied in the second set, finishing the job with another 6-2 decision to take home the cup.

Hammes and Rendon entered the ITA Cup as an at-large bid after finishing in the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals and end the tournament as the first doubles team in Washburn history to win the national championship.

Earlier in the day on the women's singles side Maja Jung's run came to an end with a two set loss to Salma Djoubri of Lynn University in the semifinals.
