MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The 2023 ITA NCAA Division II men's double champions,
Tim Hammes and
Santiago Rendon fell in the championship match of the ITA Super Bowl on Monday afternoon at the ITA Cup featuring the winners of the NCAA D2, D3, NAIA and Junior College brackets.
Hammes and Rendon fell 6-1, 7-5 to the NAIA doubles championship team from Georgia Gwinnett College as Alex Gurmendi and Santiago Villarruel jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off the Ichabods in the second set to win the title.
On Saturday, the Washburn duo won the ITA / NCAA Division II bracket national championship becoming the first Ichabod men's doubles team to return to Topeka with a championship from the ITA Cup.
Rendon and Hammes didn't drop a set through the last two rounds on their way to the first national championship of any kind for Washburn athletics since Madeline Hill won the ITA Cup women's singles championship in 2016.
