TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn men's tennis returned home for its final tournament of the fall at the Kossover Tennis Center for the Washburn Invitational. The Ichabods will have advancements into the finals of multiple draws in singles along with three doubles teams in the semifinals.  

Doubles play began the day, in the blue draw Matthew Earle and Pavlos Parson won a tight 9-7 match to advance to the semifinals while Sebastian Pjontek and Daniel Bird worked quickly to an 8-3 decision to move into the final four on the other side of the bracket.  

In the red draw Tim Hammes and Tommy Cecchetti won an 8-2 opening round match while Moritz Pieper and Graham Faris lost in a match that required extra points, losing the tiebreaker 7-5 and the match 9-8.  

The green draw features round robin action and Daniel Harkin and Ivan Ivanov began that with an 8-1 win in their first match. Mason Fair, competing with Alexandre Jaulin of Nebraska-Kearney, lost a 9-7 match to Emporia State.  

In singles play for the blue draw Cecchetti lost his first set before winning 6-1 and 10-5 in the third set tiebreaker of the quarterfinals. In the semifinals he fell in a pair of 6-3 sets to Northwest Missouri. Tim Hammes had a bye in the opening round of the blue draw and used the rest to win a 10-0 third set tiebreaker in his semifinals match.  

In the red draw both Matthew Earle and Pavlos Parson worked quick two set victories over opponents from Nebraska-Kearney. In the semifinals Earle lost his first set, won the second 6-2 but came up short in the tiebreaker, 10-5. Parson lost the opening set but recovered to win 6-4 in the second and 10-7 in the tiebreaker, moving onto the finals.  

In the green draw Daniel Bird and Daniel Harkin continued the streak of two-set quarterfinals wins for Washburn in singles. In the semifinals Bird won in two sets again, both going 6-3 in his favor. On the other side Harkin fell, losing both sets 7-5.  

Moritz Pieper won a pair of 6-2 sets in the quarterfinals of the purple draw, moving him into the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket Graham Faris fell in three sets, losing the tiebreaker 10-4. In the semifinals Pieper continued to roll, winning 6-4 and 6-2 over Rockhurst to advance to the Sunday finals.  

Mason Fair lost his opening set in the orange draw but won the second 7-6(6) forcing a tiebreaker but came up short 10-4 as well. Ivan Ivanov had the same result, winning the second set but coming up on the other end of the tiebreaker, that one 10-6.  

Both singles and doubles competition will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
