TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn women's tennis played its first competition of the fall at home with day one of the Washburn Invitational at the Kossover Tennis Center. The Ichabods had multiple undefeated days on the singles side and have three doubles teams in the semifinals for Sunday.
Doubles play got the action started. In the blue draw Lara Schmid and Maja Jung won a quick 8-4 quarterfinals match over Emporia State. On the other half of the bracket, Cadence Lynn and Peyton Koper pulled out an 8-6 win over Rockhurst to move into the semifinals.
In the red draw Issabella Pensavalle and Martine Carroll needed extra points but came away with a 9-8(3) win in the quarterfinals over ESU. Renske Ubachs and Maddie Shelley also played extra points but came up short, falling 9-7. Daphney Koutsofta played with Julia Wartecka from Nebraska-Kearney and the duo fell 8-6 in the opening round.
In the blue stage of singles play Renske Ubachs began it with a two set victory in the quarterfinals, winning 6-4 and 7-5. In the semifinals she fell in two sets to Rockhurst. Maja Jung also got a two-set quarterfinals win and followed it up with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the semifinals over Nebraska-Kearney to move into the Sunday morning finals.
Lara Schmid kicked off the red draw with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Emporia State in the quarterfinals. Peyton Koper also advanced to the semifinals in two sets, winning 6-2 in both. In the final four round both Schmid and Koper fell in two set matches to Nebraska-Kearney.
Martine Carroll lost her second set in a tiebreaker, falling to the Lopers in the quarterfinals of the green draw. Cadence Lynn retired early in the first set against Emporia State which ended her day in the draw.
In the round robin purple group Daphney Koutsofta won her first match over her former doubles partner with 6-4 and 6-2 wins. She won her second match against Emporia State on a withdraw. Maddie Shelley picked up 6-3 and 6-2 set wins in her first match of the draw over ESU and won the second match 7-6(1), 6-2. Issabella Pensavalle continued the run of 2-0 days with 6-1 and 6-0 wins in her first match of the day and 6-3, 6-2 wins in her second match.
Both singles and doubles competition will kick off on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
