No. 25 Washburn falls in three sets to Northwest Missouri State

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- No. 25 Washburn (14-8, 8-7) fell to Northwest Missouri State (13-10, 8-7) 3-0 on Friday night in the squads second road matchup in four days. The Ichabods will stay away from home for one more match against Missouri Western on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Both sides played three similar sets which featured the Bearcats pulling away in the middle and winning each one by scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-19 again.

Washburn started the match strong taking the first three points in the first set with kills by Rylee Unruh and Bella Limback kicking off the action. The Bearcats offense got going and they won the next nine points and never trailed again. A 6-0 run from the Ichabods culminating with a block from Jalyn Stevenson and Iyannah Jackson pulled WU within four at 15-11 but that was as close as the set would get with the Bearcats winning 25-19.

Northwest Missouri led 8-4 early in the second set before a 7-2 burst on five kills put Washburn down 15-7. After a slow close offensively to the first set the Bearcats hit .306 in the second set. The Ichabods hit .205 themselves, the most efficient offensive set of the night and those attacks came as part of an 11-2 response run which all began with a kill from Unruh. Washburn took the lead with the final point of the burst and extended it to two at 21-19 after a block from Jackson and Stevenson. The Bearcats came back to win the final six points of the set and go up 2-0.

After falling behind 5-2 the Ichabods reeled off four straight starting with another kill by Unruh to take an early lead in set three. Shortly after NWMSU went on a 7-1 run to create some separation. Washburn was able to get back into it ending a 6-1 run on an ace from Emma Williams to make the set 21-17 but again the Bearcats finished the set strong, winning five of the final seven points to take the match.

The Ichabods hit .113 in the match on 31 kills while Northwest knocked down 49 kills and hit .266. The home team also had advantages in assists, digs and blocks.

Austin Broadie led Washburn with eight kills hitting .294, Unruh added seven kills. Corinna McMullen led the passing attack with 20 assists and Taylor Rottingahus and Jalyn Stevenson each snagged 14 digs.

Olivia Dir paced the match with 18 kills on .421 hitting while Lauren Casey had a 10 kill 38 assist double-double.
