PITTSBURG, Kan. -- No. 19 Washburn (11-4, 5-3) lost a close first set but rebounded in the next three to beat Pittsburg State (6-10, 2-6) on the road 3-1. The Ichabods complete a three match road swing in Emporia next Tuesday against the Hornets at 6 p.m.
Washburn fell behind early in the first set before falling 25-21 but won the next three sets by a combined 42 points, 25-11, 25-10 and 25-12.
The Gorillas got off to a fast start at home leading 7-3 early. A kill from Austin Broadie sparked a 3-0 Washburn run but Pitt State responded by winning six of the next seven points. An ace from Jalyn Stevenson pulled the Ichabods within two points but they never got any closer, falling 25-21 in the opening set.
A 5-0 run early in the second set beginning with two kills from Rachel Schwensen set the tone for the rest of the match. Schwensen, who reached 1,000 career kills in the match, got the first kill in a 6-0 Ichabod run which was finished off by Rylee Unruh delivering a kill to go up 13-4. Washburn's lead got up to 14 which was the difference at the end of the set with the Ichabds winning 25-11.
Washburn wasted no time in the third set going up 5-0 after an ace from Corinna McMullen. The lead grew to double-digits after a block from Broadie and Bella Limback made the set 15-5. A third 5-0 burst with two kills from Jalyn Stevenson pushed the set into the 20's and Schwensen was able to finish it with another kill.
The Ichabod offense continued to work more efficiently as the sets went on, hitting .519 in the fourth set with 14 kills and no errors. McMullen served up a kill for Unruh to make it 14-7 and after one Gorilla point Washburn won the next seven points beginning with McMullen sneaking over an attack for a kill. The Ichabods traded points the rest of the way which was all it took to win 25-12.
After a slow start Washburn outhit Pittsburg State .256 to .074 in the match, with a 45 to 37 kill advantage. The Ichabods were effective behind the line, collecting 11 aces while holding the Gorillas to just one. Washburn also made 64 digs to just 53 for Pitt State and had an advantage in assists.
Rachel Schwensen had 13 kills to reach the 1K mark over her career, she hit .458 in the process and added five digs. Rylee Unruh had eight kills while hitting .400 and Austin Broadie matched with eight and a .389 attacking percentage. Corinna McMullen notched a double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs. Jalyn Stevenson had seven kills and led the Ichabods with 17 digs.
Janae Thurston had 12 kills to pace Pitt State, Jadyn Jackson had a match-high 27 kills.
