TOPEKA, Kan. -- After falling down 1-0 and 2-1 Washburn (14-10, 8-9) recovered and took a lead in the fifth set of Friday night's match against No 17 Central Oklahoma (23-4, 14-3) but came out on the losing side of a second straight five set match. The Ichabods turnaround and play Pittsburg State at 2 p.m. on Saturday for senior day.
Both teams traded the first four sets back and forth with UCO winning 25-20 in the first, Washburn 25-16, back to the Bronchos at 26-24 and the Ichabods 25-18 in the fourth before Central Oklahoma won 16-14 in the fifth.
The Bronchos started the first set on a 6-1 run with four coming on kills. A Maddie Steiner ace was part of a 3-0 run by Washburn to pull within two at 9-7 but UCO came back with four straight points. The Ichabods got within three points five more times in the set, the final coming at 23-20 after a kill by Austin Broadie but were unable to get over the hump falling 25-20.
Jalyn Stevenson and Rachel Schwensen knocked down back-to-back kills to jump out to a 6-2 lead in the second. Taryn Pridgett kept the momentum going by starting and ending a 5-0 Washburn run to make the set 15-6. Washburn's offense stayed hot, hitting .286 in the set, the highest mark by any team in a set in the match. They finished the set defensively with Schwensen and Broadie combining for a block.
Central Oklahoma bounced back to jump out to a 7-2 lead in the third knocking down five straight kills to break a 2-2 tie. Washburn won four of the next five points, pulling within two on a Bella Limback and Iyannah Jackson block. WU stayed close and was finally able to tie the set back up at 15 with a 4-0 run that started and ended with kills by Jackson. The Bronchos offense tallied 21 kills in the set and got hot offensively to go up 24-21, but three straight by the Ichabods tied it up before UCO won the final two points.
For the first time all match both teams stayed close early in a set, splitting the first 10 points of the fourth. A Corinna McMullen ace completed a 3-0 Washburn rally but Central Oklahoma quickly tied things at nine. The Ichabods were able to create all the separation they needed winning four of five points to go up 16-12. They held on the rest of the way, winning three of the last four points and ending the set on a Stevenson kill from Sydney Conner.
Washburn doubled the Bronchos score early in the fifth 6-3 after a Schwensen kill. An attack error by UCO put the Ichabods up 8-4 at the side switch. Another kill by Schwensen made it 14-12 in the set before Central Oklahoma rattled off four straight points to win the set and match 16-14.
The visitors out-killed Washburn 71 to 64, while the Ichabods hit .209 to the Bronchos' .200 and held a 107 to 103 dig advantage.
Jalyn Stevenson led in kills with 15 and added another double-double to her season total with 18 digs. Taryn Pridgett had a season-high 13 kills while hitting .256 and Rachel Schwensen added 14 kills and six digs. Both setters recorded double-doubles, with Corinna McMullen tallying 26 assists and 15 digs and Sydney Conner racking up 25 and 14 respectively. Taylor Rottinghaus led in digs for WU with 22.
Mallorie Koehn led the Bronchos with 15 kills, Jaedynn Evans had a match-high 37 digs and Lindsey Houran had 58 assists.
