Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- No. 16 Washburn men's tennis lost its first match of the season in a neutral court contest against No. 7 Indianapolis 5-2.
Doubles play began with a loss at No.1 for the Ichabods as Sebastian Pjontek and Noah Neideck lost a 6-0 decision to the No. 1 ranked doubles pair in the nation. Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon evened the score at No. 2, winning 6-2. At No. 3, Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Daniel Bird came back late to win 7-6 and secure the doubles point.
The Greyhounds quickly evened the match back up in singles, as Tim Hammes fell at No. 1, 6-3 and 6-4. No. 35 Sebastian Pjontek had a battle in the first set at No. 2, losing 7-5, and would also lose the second set 6-0 which put Indianapolis in front.
Santiago Rendon also fell in two sets, losing both 6-2 from No. 3. Noah Neideck came close to forcing a third set at No. 6 but also fell with scores of 6-3 and 7-3 to clinch the match for Indianapolis. Daniel Bird was able to pick up a win in a three-set battle at No. 4, winning 6-4, 2-6 and 6-3. Moritz Pieper started strong with a 6-3 win but fell in a close 7-6 second set and lost 10-1 in the tiebreaker.
Washburn returns to action quickly, facing Illinois Springfield on the road in Springfield on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
