Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- No. 15 Washburn women's tennis fell in a tightly contested top-25 battle with No. 8 Indianapolis 5-2.
Doubles play began with a win for the Ichabods at No. 1 as Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung were able to take a 6-4 victory and earn an advantage. At No. 2 Marta Torres and Isabella Martensson were close throughout but ultimately fell 7-5. Casie Curry and Issabella Pensavalle were tied 6-6 at No. 3 but fell 7-6.
Singles play started better for Washburn with a quick win on court two for Marta Torres with scores of 6-3 and 6-2. No. 2 Sonia Smagina followed with a two-set victory of her own at No. 1, 6-3 and 6-1. No. 42 Maja Jung fell in a close three-set battle from No. 3, losing 6-4 in the first set, battling back to win 7-6 in the second and then losing 6-4 in the third.
Issabella Pensavalle won her first set 6-3 at No. 5 but fell 6-1 in each of the next two, putting the Greyhounds ahead in the match. Casie Curry also began with a first set win, with a score of 6-4, but the score flipped the final two sets as she fell at No. 4 and Indianapolis was able to clinch the match. Isabella Martensson dropped a two-set decision at No. 6 with 6-4 and 6-2 margins.
The Ichabods return to action quickly, facing Illinois Springfield on the road in Springfield on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
