TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 17 Washburn women's tennis got its first action outside on Tuesday afternoon with a 7-0 exhibition sweep of McPherson College.
The Ichabods (5-2) and Bulldogs (1-3) played only two doubles matches which both went in favor of Washburn. Maja Jung and Maddie Shelley won a quick 6-0 match at No. 1 and Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle won 6-3 at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
Casie Curry led off singles with a swift two-set victory at No. 2 with decisions of 6-1 and 6-3. Martensson followed with a two-set win of her own, winning 6-0 in the first set and 6-4 in the second. Jung clinched the match at No. 1 winning 6-1 in the opening set and 7-6(2) in the second.
Shelley finished her spring debut with set wins of 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 5. Pensavalle completed the sweep winning two sets at No. 5 both by scores of 6-1. No match was played at No. 6 singles, as the Bulldogs only brought five players, giving the Ichabods the seventh point by default in the sweep.
