Washburn wraps up three-game roadtrip with Newman on Wednesday

OPENING TIP
• The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up a three-game trip away from Lee Arena when they travel to Wichita on Wednesday to face Newman.
• The Ichabods are 10-11 and 7-8 in the MIAA after falling 79-53 at No. 4-ranked Northwest Missouri last time out.
• The Jets are 7-15 and 3-13 in the MIAA winning their last game against Nebraska-Kearney on Feb. 4 in an 84-74 win.
• The Ichabods lead the series 28-7 and have won the last seven meetings.
• Washburn has won the last three games played in Wichita and have not lost in Fugate Gymnasium since a 90-79 loss on Nov. 20, 2014.
• Wednesday's meeting will be the only one between the Ichabods and Jets this season.
• The Ichabods are coming off the program's 30th 20-win season and the fourth under Ichabod head coach Brett Ballard in his five seasons reaching their fourth NCAA postseason in five years under head coach Brett Ballard in 2022-23.
• The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team was tabbed fourth in both the MIAA Preseason Coaches and MIAA Preseason Media polls announced Oct. 11 by the conference at the annual Basketball Media Day held at the College Basketball Experience in Kansas City
• The 2022-23 season marks the 118th season of Ichabod basketball.

ICHABOD BITS
Andrew Orr leads the Ichabods in scoring at 13.9 ppg while averaging 14.7 ppg in MIAA contests. He scored a career-high 26 points at Missouri Western on Feb. 1. He is third on the team in rebounds at 5.7 per game. Orr is 11th in the MIAA in scoring average and third in the MIAA in field goal percentage at 61 percent going 36 of 47 from the field in his last four games.
Tyler Nelson is averaging 11.7 ppg overall scoring 12.3 ppg in MIAA contests. He tied a career-high with 25 points against Nebraska-Kearney and has reached double digits in his last seven of his last eight games averaging 15.4 ppg.
Levi Braun is scoring 10.0 ppg and has hit 51 of 114 3-pointers (45 percent). He tied a career-high with seven rebounds against Missouri Western last week. Of his 68 field goals this season, 51 have been from 3-point range.
Connor Deffebaugh is scoring 8.6 ppg adding 3.1 assists per game missing the seven games with an injury returning on Jan. 28 against Northeastern State and is 10th in the MIAA in assists per game at 3.4.
Michael Keegan is scoring 8.0 ppg with 5.8 rpg with 18 steals and 17 blocks. In MIAA games he is scoring 8.6 ppg with 5.5 rpg … he is seventh in the MIAA in blocks per game.
Jarmell Johnson is scoring 7.2 ppg with 3.1 rpg. Johnson scoring 7.1 ppg with 3.6 rpg in MIAA games.
Brady Christiansen is scoring 5.5 adding 7.4 rpg which leads the team. He is ranked third fourth in the MIAA in rebounds. In MIAA games is he averaging 5.9 ppg with 7.3 rpg. This season, Christiansen has 156 rebounds, which is fifth on the Ichabod all-time freshman chart. His 7.7 rpg average would be second on the chart if the season ended today.
Jaden Monday is scoring 4.9 ppg and has gone 18 of 55 from 3-point range this season.
Jordan Vincent is scoring 4.5 ppg with 1.1 rpg and 2.0 apg. He has gone 18 of 23 from the free throw line this season.
Zaid Dajani is scoring 2.6 ppg in 16 appearances.
Emmanuel Byrd has played in three games and recorded a career-high eight rebounds against Northwest Missouri.

COACHES
WASHBURN ICHABOD HEAD COACH BRETT BALLARD
• is 114-60 in his sixth season as the Ichabods' head coach and 147-90 overall in his eighth year as a head coach.
• has led the Ichabods to four NCAA postseason appearances in five full seasons at Washburn.
• was named the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball head coach on April 6, 2017 after spending the 2014-15 to 2016-17 seasons as an assistant coach with the Wake Forest and Tulsa basketball programs after working under head coach Danny Manning 2012-17 seasons.
• he helped Wake Forest to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2009-10 season following the 2016-17 season.
• prior to taking over the head coaching position at Baker, Ballard spent seven years on Bill Self's staff at Kansas, his alma mater.
• he played two years for the Jayhawks under head coach Roy Williams from 2000-02 after transferring from Hutchinson Community College in his hometown of Hutchinson, Kan. In his two seasons as a Jayhawk, the team reached the 2001 NCAA Sweet Sixteen and appeared in the 2002 NCAA Final Four in Atlanta.

LAST MEETING WITH NEWMAN
(Jan. 26, 2022)  TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods closed the first half on an 18-4 run and opened the second half with an 18-2 run rolling to a 91-60 win over the Newman Jets on Wednesday night in Lee Arena.
The Ichabod deciding run started after Newman cut the lead to three at 28-25 with 4:46 to play in the opening frame with a Jonny Clausing free throw. During the first half spurt, Tyler Geiman scored seven and Clausing finished with five as Washburn led 49-26 at the break after shooting 50 percent from the field and hit six 3-pointers.
The second half onslaught covered the first 5:12 of the stanza as Washburn pushed out to a 64-31 lead with 14:10 to play eventually going up by a game-high 34 points with 11:46 to go as the Jets fell to 1-20 in games played in Topeka in the series as the Ichabods have won the last 18-straight meetings in the capital city.
Overall the 36-6 run covered 10:36 of the game where the Ichabods hit 14 of 24 shots adding four 3-pointers while holding Newman (4-12, 1-10 MIAA) to 2 of 14 from the field forcing nine turnovers during the stretch. The Ichabods outscored the Jets 29 to 2 in points off turnovers in the game.
Geiman led all scorers with 20 points while dishing out 10 assists recording his 13th career double double and his fourth with at least 20 points and 10 assists. Jeremy Harrell picked up his first Washburn double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Connor Deffebaugh added 15 points as 13 of the 14 Ichabods who saw action scored.
Deandre Johnson led the Jets with 11 points.
The Ichabods outscored the Jets 42-22 in the paint and Washburn's bench had a 37 to 25 advantage.
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH NEWMAN
• Wednesday's meeting with the Jets is the 36th all-time.
• The Ichabods lead the all-time series 28-7.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Feb. 4, 2023) MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabods could not overcome a slow start in a 79-53 loss to No. 4-ranked Northwest Missouri on Saturday in Bearcat Arena.
The Bearcats (21-2, 14-2 MIAA)  jumped out to a 13-4 lead eight minutes in the game, but the Ichabods came back to trim the lead back to four at 13-9 on a lay up by Brady Christansen before the Bearcats pushed out to a lead as many as 25 in the half taking a 39-16 lead into the halftime break.
After shooting 29 percent in the first half, the Ichabods improved to 46 percent in the second half hitting 11 of 24 shots and were outscored by the Bearcats 40-37 in the final 20 minutes.
Andrew Orr led the Ichabods with 17 points on 5 of 6 shooting and Jarmell Johnson had 13 off the bench. Emmanuel Byrd had six points and eight rebounds.
Northwest was led by Wes Dreamer with 25.
Washburn (10-11, 7-8 MIAA) outrebounded the Bearcats 30-29, but the Bearcats outscored the Ichabods 22 to 5 on points off turnovers as Washburn committed 16 in the game..
