No. 19 Ichabods face No. 12 Saints and No. 2 Lions to finish time in Florida

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 19 Washburn women's tennis wraps up its spring trip to Florida against No. 12 Flagler College on Sunday and against the No. 2 ranked Saint Leo Lions on Monday. 

Ichabod Breakdown

  • Washburn concludes its three match trip to Florida with a Sunday contest against No. 12 Flagler College and will face No. 2 ranked Saint Leo on Monday.
  • The Ichabods are 8-2 on the year after defeating Rollins College 4-3 on Wednesday. 
  • Flagler College is 7-3 on the year while Saint Leo enters the week at 12-1.
  • The Ichabods are in the midst of a six match winning streak, the longest of the season so far. 
  • Washburn is ranked 19th nationally in the latest ITA Tennis Rankings
  • Washburn is coming off a 16-12 season in 2021-22 and the second appearance in the NCAA National Championships in program history.
  • The Ichabods were picked first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches poll.
  • The Ichabods return six players from last season's roster and add two transfers and one freshman.

  • Sonia Smagina is ranked No. 2 in the latest ITA singles rankings after advancing to the ITA Cup singles championship in the fall. 
  • Smagina is joined by Maja Jung and the pair are ranked No. 17 by the country in doubles
  • Smagina and Lara Schmid also have a No. 20 ranking together after qualifying for the ITA Cup in the fall. 
  • Maja Jung is ranked No. 32 in the ITA singles rankings
  • Smagina leads the Ichabods in singles, going 17-1 on the year and 8-0 in duals all at No. 1
  • Jung has gone 14-3 in singles including 9-1 in duals and is 6-0 at No. 2
  • Marta Torres has gone 6-3 in duals including 3-1 at No. 2
  • Isabella Martensson is 7-4 in singles and has gone 6-1 in duals with a 4-0 record at No. 5
  • Washburn has won 63.3% of its singles matches this season, going 62-36
  • The Ichabods are a combined 25-5 at No. 1-3 in duals

  • Washburn defeated No. 48 Rollins College 4-3 in Winter Park, Fla.
  • The Ichabods swept doubles play with 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2 wins.
  • Sonia Smagina, Maja Jung and Isabella Martensson each went 2-0 on the day with singles and doubles wins 
  • Smagina and Jung stayed as a doubles pair, moving to 7-0, both also stayed unbeaten in singles play during the spring 
  • Washburn won its sixth straight match, its longest winning streak of the season

  • Marta Torres is five wins away from 40 career singles wins and is also five away from 50 doubles victories

Head coach Kirby Ronning

  • Ronning is in his third year as head coach of the Ichabod men's and women's tennis teams
  • He has led both teams to the NCAA tournament in both seasons at the helm
  • Ronning has a combined record of 76-30 in his two plus seasons at Washburn
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods, Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • Ronning played for Bethel University (Minn.) for four seasons and was honored with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Sportsmanship award two times.
  • Volunteer assistant Kurt Reid and graduate assistant and former Ichabod tennis player Miller Zeiders round out the coaching staff

Schedule spring forward

  • Matches against No. 12 Flagler College and No. 2 Saint Leo will be the final two on the Ichabods Florida trip.
  • Washburn has six remaining MIAA matches on the slate in the spring.
  • The match on March 31 against Newman will be senior day for the Ichabods.  
  • Washburn wraps up the regular season with two matches in Arkansas, the final regular season game comes on April 15 against Southern Arkansas University
  • The Women's MIAA Tournament will take place from April 21-23

Scouting the Saints

  • No. 12 ranked Flagler enters the match at 7-3 after a 6-1 win over No. 35 Wingate on Wednesday
  • The Saints have won their last five matches and are 5-1 at home
  • Flagler has four players ranked in the latest ITA singles rankings
  • Luisa Hrda comes in at No. 5, followed by Nadja Meier at No. 6
  • Eryka Kruk is No. 53 and Dana Heimen is No. 56
  • Meier leads the Saints with a 19-2 record in singles, going 10-0 at No. 2
  • Hrda is 18-4 overall and has gone 8-1 from the No. 1 spot
  • Both Kruk and Heimen have 14 wins on the season

  • As a team Flager has won 69.0% of its doubles matches, going 40-18

Flagler College Staff

  • The Saints are led by Rodrigo Puebla in his seventh season at the helm
  • Prior to his time at Flagler he served as an assistant coach at Iowa State University and was the head women's coach at the University of North Florida from 2008-11
  • In his first six seasons Puebla accrewed a 91-40 record, in his career he is 200-62
  • Volunteer assistant coach Aline Berkenbrock rounds out the staff

History with the Saints

  • Washburn and Flagler College have played each other once in program history with the Ichabods leading 1-0 
  • The match was a 4-3 win for Washburn on March 10, 2021 in St. Augustine, Fla. 

Match #12 - at No. 2 Saint Leo

Look over the Lions

  • No. 2 ranked Saint Leo is 12-1 entering the weekend but will have a match against No. 1 Barry University on Saturday before taking on the Ichabods
  • The Lions are 4-0 at home so far this season 
  • Saint Leo has three players ranked in the latest ITA singles rankings
  • Claudia Borbon is ranked No. 11, Marta Vicens at No. 17 and Luzia Obermeier is ranked No. 50
  • Kamilya Shailina leads Saint Leo with an 11-2 singles record, she has gone 6-0 at No. 4
  • Obermeier is 9-2 on the season at No. 4 and No. 5 
  • Both Lavinia Lancellotti and Marta Vicens have eight wins on the season

 Saint Leo Staff

  • Chad Berryhill leads the Lions in his eighth season at the helm
  • Berryhill has led the Lions to a combined seven NCAA postseason appearances, five CoSIDA honors, 15 ITA All-Americans and a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Men's Tennis Regular Season Championship title
  • Was honored as the ITA South Region Men's Tennis Coach of the Year (2018), SSC Men's and Women's Tennis Coach of the Year (2018), and the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Coach of the Year for the Florida Division (2019)
  • Tormer Ichabod tennis All-MIAA selection Maria Soler Valverde rounds out the coaching staff

History with the Lions

  • The Ichabods and Saint Leo have played twice in program history, with the Lions winning both matchups 
  • The first match between the two took place on March 22, 2018 and was an 8-1 win for Saint Leo
