Washburn wins final Florida match 5-2 over No. 20 Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Washburn men's tennis got back in the win column with a 5-2 over No. 20 Florida Southern on Monday afternoon to close out the Ichabods trip south. Washburn will get right back on the court, beginning a four match homestand against No. 41 Harding on Thursday at the Washburn Tennis Courts. 

Doubles play was a clean sweep for the Ichabods beginning at No. 3 where Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Daniel Bird earned a 6-2 victory to kick off the action. No. 34 ranked Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon finished quickly after, scoring a 6-3 win from No. 2 to earn the doubles point. 

At No. 1 Sebastian Pjontek and Miquel Perez were up 5-3 over Christ Fok and Matteo Feggi, the No. 6 ranked doubles pairing in the nation, when the two Moccasins retired, giving Washburn a sweep.  

Pjontek, ranked No. 70 in singles, continued that momentum with a quick 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 to begin singles play. Bird followed at No. 4, winning 6-3 in the first set and battling for a 7-6(4) win in the second.  

At the top of the lineup No. 58 Hammes lost a close first set 7-5 and bounced back quickly to pick up a 6-1 win in the second set. He lost the tiebreaking set 6-4 which gave the Moccasins their first point of the match. Daniel Harkin got the point back and clinched the match with a three-set win from No. 6. He earned a 6-4 win in the opening set, fell 6-3 in the second but reversed the score to win the match clinching third set 6-3.  

After the clincher Moritz Pieper lost a three-set battle at No. 5, each side won one of the first two sets 6-4 with Pieper falling 6-2 in the final set. Rendon closed out the match with a long battle at No. 3, he won the first set 6-4, lost 7-6(1) in a long second set but pulled out a 7-5 win in the third set to finish the match.
