TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 38 Washburn men's tennis (9-5, 1-1) held an early lead against No. 16 Northwest Missouri State (7-5, 2-0) but could not hold on late, falling 4-3 to the Bearcats Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods take on Emporia State next Thursday at the Washburn Tennis Complex.
Washburn began the six hour match with a clean sweep of doubles, starting at No. 1 with No. 21 ranked Miquel Perez and Sebastian Pjontek taking down the No. 33 ranked Bearcat duo Fillippo Piranomonte and Andrea Zamurri 6-4. Court three finished next, with Daniel Bird and Yoshinobu Nakatsuji clinching the doubles point with a 7-6(2) victory. No. 29 ranked Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon finished shortly after, defeating No. 8 ranked Mason Meier and Jan Skerbatis 7-6(5).
Pjontek continued rolling in singles, finishing first with a three set victory over No. 27 Michael Delebois. Pjontek won 6-3 in the first set and after the scores were reversed in the second he rallied for a 6-1 third set win. No. 55 Hammes began with a 6-2 win over No. 16 ranked Zamurri at No. 1 but lost a long second set battle 7-6(3) and would come up short 6-4 in the third set.
On court three Bird lost in two sets to No. 65 Fabien Calloud by scores of 7-5, 6-4 to even the match up. Northwest Missouri Claimed its first lead after Moritz Pieper fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. At No. 4 Rendon split the first two sets, winning 6-4 then losing 6-2. The third set was no split with Rendon winning 6-0 to knot the match back up.
At No. 6 Daniel Harkin claimed a first set victory, 6-4, but the score was reversed in the second set before losing 7-5 in the third set to clinch the match for the Bearcats.
