TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 21-ranked Washburn Ichabods won two games on Saturday by scores of 2-1 wins including a walk-off in the opener as the home squad topped Central Missouri in MIAA play at Gahnstrom Field. The Ichabods will return to the field next weekend with conference twinbills at Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri.
Game 1 – WU 2, UCM 1
The Ichabods struck first in their second at bat of the day when
Jaden LaBarge started the inning with a ground-rule double down the left field line and then came around to score on a single by
Autymn Schreiner on a single up the middle.
Neither team would score until the Jennies pushed an unearned run across the plate with two outs tying the score at 1-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Schreiner doubled after a nine-pitch at bat to lead off the inning and after a sac bunt by
Jenna Moore moving
Gracie Gallagher, who entered as a pinch runner, to third,
Hadley Kerschen singled to left center sending the winning run home for the 2-1 win.
Jaycee Ginter went the distance striking out six scattering three his in the win improving to 18-2 on the season.
Paige Robbins and Schreiner each had two hits for the Ichabods.
Game 2 – WU 2, UCM 1
For the first time of the day, the Jennies (18-11, 4-4 MIAA) had the lead over the Ichabods (27-5, 6-2 MIAA) when they took a 1-0 lead in the third inning scoring with two outs.
Washburn jumped back in front in the fourth inning when Ginter led off the frame with a single and after
Allison Hemsath entered as a pinch runner,
Marrit Mead doubled down the line sending Hemsath to third. With two outs,
Erin Boles came up and singled to right field scoring both Hemsath and Mead as the Ichabods gained the 2-1 lead.
Ginter returned to the game in the circle to pitch the final three innings striking out five facing 12 batters allowing two hits and no runs earning her 19
th win of the season.
The Jennies threatened in the top of the seventh moving runners to second and third, but Ginter retired the side with a strikeout and an infield pop out to end the game.
The Ichabods were limited to five hits with Robbins, Ginter, Mead, Boles and
Kimi Patterson recording the base knocks.
