Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

No. 29 Washburn glides past No. 25 Griffons 5-2

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 29 Washburn women's tennis (9-5, 3-1) bounced back after losing one conference match to take down No. 25 Missouri Western State (10-4, 3-2) 5-2 at home. The Ichabods will host Emporia State tomorrow at 1 p.m., senior day presentations will take place at 11:30 a.m.  

Washburn got a sweep in doubles play starting on the first court with No. 18 Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung winning a 6-1 match. Casie Curry and Marta Torres clinched the match's first point from No. 3 with a 6-3 win. Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle won 6-4 at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep.  

No. 2 Smagina started singles action with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over No. 67 Isabella MacGibbon at No. 1. Jung, ranked No. 24, followed with a two-set win of her own at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3. 

All four other singles matches went more than two sets, beginning with Curry at No. 4. She lost the first set 6-3 but rallied to win 6-2 in each of the next two sets to clinch the match for the Ichabods.  

Martensson also lost her first set, 7-5, but came back to win 6-3, 7-6(4) at No. 4. Pensavalle lost a first set tiebreaker from No. 6, 7-6(2), came back to win the second set 6-4 but lost the super tiebreaker 10-6. At No. 3 Torres won a long first set 7-6(11) but fell in the final two sets 6-1, 6-3 to close the match.
