MAGNOLIA, Ar. -- No. 38 Washburn men's tennis finished the regular season on the road Saturday defeating Southern Arkansas (7-13) 4-2. The Ichabods (13-7) finish as the second seed in the MIAA and will take the court next on Wednesday, April 19 at 2 p.m. against Southeastern Oklahoma State in Edmond, Okla.
For a second straight day No. 17 Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon started doubles, winning 6-3 at No. 2. Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Daniel Bird clinched the doubles point for Washburn at No. 3 with a tight 7-5 victory.
Miquel Perez and Sebastian Pjontek, ranked No. 15 nationally, narrowly trailed the No. 26 pair of Sander Jans and Ben Schneider 6-5 when the match was left unfinished.
At No. 1 singles Hammes, ranked No. 28, won his first set 6-4 but fell 6-0 in the second and lost a tight 7-5 third set to No. 12 Jans as the Muleriders evened the match at one. Perez won his opening set 6-4 but fell 6-3, 6-2 in each of the final two sets at No. 3. No. 49 Pjontek evened the match back up with a long 7-6(11) first set and used that momentum to ride to a 6-1 second set victory.
Bird won two tight sets in his No. 4 match, 7-5 in the first and a 7-6(6) tiebreaker in the second. Rendon provided the clinching point at No. 5 with 7-5 and 6-2 set victories to make it a 4-2 match.
Daniel Harkin lost his opening set 6-4, rebounded with a 6-2 win in the second and led 2-1 in the third with the rest left unfinished.
