PITTSBURG, Kan. – The No. 20 Washburn Ichabods bounced back with a doubleheader sweep over Pittsburg State winning 10-5 and 6-3 over the Gorillas on Saturday on the road. Washburn (33-11, 12-8 MIAA) is back in action next weekend at Northeastern State and Rogers State the following day before wrapping up the regular season hosting Rockhurst on April 26 and Emporia State on April 29.
Game 1 – WU 10, PSU 5
The Washburn Ichabods scored in six of the seven innings of the game holding off a late charge by the Gorillas in the 10-5 win pounding out 14 hits in the win.
Washburn's first run came in the top of the first when
Marrit Mead started the game off with a single and then came around to score on a single by
Jaycee Ginter as the Ichabods went up 1-0.
The Ichabods added two more in the top of the second when
Kaylee Wagner walked and after a triple by Mead scored from second.
Ellington Hogle then collected a single sending Mead home as Washburn went up 3-0.
After a scoreless third, Mead doubled to center scoring
Autymn Schreiner who had a one-out double as the Ichabods boosted the lead to 4-0.
In the fifth, Washburn's
Jaden LaBarge singled up the middle scoring
Paige Robbins as Washburn increased its lead to 5-0. Pittsburg State came back with a solo run in the fifth, but Washburn added two more in the top of the sixth on a two-out single by
Erin Boles that drove in Ginter and
Hadley Kerschen.
Pitt State (23-17, 8-10 MIAA) added three in the seventh as
Sheyenne Cheek relieved starter Ginter and got of the bases-loaded jam to pick up the save. Washburn stretched its lead to 10-3 with three runs in the top of the seventh on a sac fly by
Ellington Hogle scoring
Gracie Gallagher who entered as a pinch runner for Wagner who started out the inning with a double. Ginter then drove in two of her own with a single to center scoring both Mead and Schriener.
The Gorillas added two more in the seventh, but would get no closer.
Ginter moved to 22-6 in the circle with the win while driving in three with two hits. Mead was 3 for 4 with three runs scored with a single, double and a triple driving in two. Hogle and Boles also had 2 RBI in the opener.
Game 2 – WU 6, PSU 3
For the second game in a row, the Ichabods jumped on the board first with a solo run in the top of the first when LaBarge drove in Mead who led off the game with a walk and then stole second advancing to third on a single by
Hadley Kerschen.
Neither team scored until the third when Washburn moved up to a 3-0 lead when
Paige Robbins singled driving in both Ginter and Kerschen. In the top of the fifth, Schreiner's double down the right field line to score Boles and Robbins and after Hogle walked, Kerschen singled as the Ichabods pushed the lead to 6-0.
The Gorillas scored three runs in the seventh cutting the lead in half at 6-3 with five hits, but starter
Sadie Walker re-entered the game and pitched the final out for the win.
Kerschen had three hits in the second game as the Ichabods finished with 12 in the game. LaBarge had two hits as everyone in the Ichabod starting batting line up had at least one hit.
Walker tossed 5 1/3 innings striking out six not allowing a run improving to 6-4 on the season.
