EDMOND, Okla. – The No. 32-ranked Washburn Ichabod men's tennis team fell 4-3 to Southeastern Oklahoma State in non-conference play on Sunday. Washburn will return to action on April 6 against Cameron in Lawton, Okla. making its second trip in a row to Oklahoma.
The Ichabods (10-6) started out the match taking the doubles point as No. 2-ranked
Sebastian Pjontek and
Miquel Perez topped Stipan Madzar and Gen Naraya 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles
Tim Hammes and
Santiago Rendon, ranked No. 12, won their match over Juan Gonzalez and Marin Jurkovic 6-2. The No. 3 doubles squad of
Daniel Bird and Yoshimobu Nakatsuji dropped their match to Diego Orduz and Thao Ncube 6-1.
Moving to singles, Hammes needed only 51 minutes to dispatch of Madzar winning 6-3, 6-1 a the Ichabods went up 2-0.
After the Ichabods fell at No. 4 singles when Rendon fell to Naraya 6-4, 6-1, SEOSU trimmed the lead to 2-1 and then tied the score at 2-2 when Orduz picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over
Daniel Harkin at No. 6 singles.
Pjontek pushed Washburn back in front at 3-2 after topping Ncube 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Again the Storm came back to tie the score at 3-3 when Jurkovic topped Perez 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 setting up a winner take all match at No. 3 singles.
Southeastern Oklahoma (10-6) won the match at No. 3 singles clinching the win when Gonzalez topped Bird 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 in a nearly three hour match.
