No. 25 Washburn wins 2023 MIAA Championship 4-3 over No. 50 RiverHawks

EDMOND, Okla. -- No. 25 Washburn women's tennis won its seventh MIAA Championship in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 50 Northeastern State 4-3 to claim the title. The Ichabods will automatically qualify for the NCAA Regional Tournament and will find out their opponent and location at the selection show Monday evening.

The Ichabods (16-6) were the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and defeated Missouri Western State and the No. 4 seeded RiverHawks (12-8) for a second time this season on the road to the team's first title since the 2018-19 season.

After leaving yesterday's match unfinished Marta Torres and Casie Curry left no doubt at No. 3, winning 6-3 to begin the match. No. 7 ranked Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung won 6-4 at No. 1, knocking off No. 39 Emilia Cosatto and Alisha Moldakhmetova to clinch doubles for the Ichabods.

Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle led a 5-2 match at No. 2 that went unfinished.

Just like in doubles, Torres got the scoring started in singles. She dropped only three total games in her No. 4 match, winning 6-2, 6-1. Martensson lost her match at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4 giving the RiverHawks their first point of the match.

Curry got the point right back, winning her opening set 6-4 and closing the match out with a 6-3 second set victory at No. 3 to set up match point. Northeastern State added another point with Pensavalle falling 6-4, 6-1 on court six.

At No. 2 Jung, ranked No. 29, lost her opening set 6-4 but bounced back in the second set to win 6-3 and set up a tiebreaking set. In the third she led early but was unable to hold on, falling 6-3 and leaving the match tied.

On the top court No. 2 Smagina battled with No. 8 Cosatto. In the first set Cosatto came out on top, winning 7-5. In the second set Cosatto jumped out to a 5-3 lead before Smagina rallied to win the final four games and force a third set. In the conference title deciding set the first six games were split 3-3. Three of the next four went to Smagina, along with the title for the Ichabods.
