No. 24 Ichabods face No. 27 Augustana Tuesday for trip to the NCAA National Championships

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 24 Washburn women's tennis begins NCAA postseason play Tuesday against No. 27 Augustana at 1 p.m. in Topeka with the winner advancing to the NCAA National Championships in Orlando, Fla. beginning May 11. 

Ichabod Breakdown
  • No. 2 Washburn faces No. 3 Augustana in the second round of the NCAA Central Regional Tournament on Tuesday, May 2 at the Washburn Tennis Complex
  • The Ichabods qualified for the tournament for the 19th time in program history after winning its seventh MIAA Championship with a 4-3 win over Northeastern State.
  • Washburn enters the tournament 16-6, winning its last six matches
  • No. 27 nationally ranked Augustana is 21-3 on the year and defeated Southeastern Oklahoma State 4-1 to advance to the second round
  • Six Ichabods were named to All-MIAA teams last week and Sonia Smagina was named player of the year overall.

  • The Ichabods got a 6-3 doubles victory from Casie Curry and Marta Torres at No. 3 and clinched doubles after Sonia Smagina and Maja Jung won 6-4 at No. 1
  • Smagina, Torres and Curry all went 2-0 on the day with singles victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 respectively

Milestone markers Head coach Kirby Ronning
  • Ronning is in his third year as head coach of the Ichabod men's and women's tennis teams
  • He has led both teams to the NCAA tournament in both seasons at the helm
  • Ronning has a combined record of 94-39 in his two plus seasons at Washburn
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods, Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • Ronning played for Bethel University (Minn.) for four seasons and was honored with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Sportsmanship award two times.
The assistants
  • Volunteer assistant Kurt Reid and graduate assistant Miller Zeiders round out the men's coaching staff
  • Reid enters his fourth season as an assistant with the Ichabods.
  • He started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • Zeiders joins the Ichabods after a four-year career at Washburn from 2018-22

  • The Ichabods defeated Augustana 4-2 on Feb. 19 earlier this season

  • The two teams played twice last season, splitting the matches 1-1
  • The Ichabods defeated Augustana 4-3 in the second round of the NCAA Central Region Championships to advance to the NCAA Championships last season
