TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team fell 5-2 in its MIAA Tournament opener on Wednesday at the Envista Softball Complex at Lake Shawnee in Topeka. Washburn will face Fort Hays State at 11 a.m. on Thursday in an elimination game.
The Ichabods jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a home run by
Jaycee Ginter in their first at bat and Washburn held the lead until the bottom of the third when the Jennies scored twice on a two-run homer by Abbey Fischer put UCM (33-19) up 2-1.
The Jennies added a solo run in the bottom of the fifth and then in the sixth,
Marrit Mead connected on a home run cutting the lead to 3-2. The Jennies added two more in the bottom of the sixth leading to the 5-2 win.
Jaden LaBarge had two of Washburn's five hits and Mead,
Ellington Hogle and Ginter had the other three.
Ginter took the loss in the circle falling to 23-9 striking out five.
