TOPEKA, Kan. – After getting 11 hits in the series-opening victory yesterday, Washburn baseball's offense went cold in game two of the MIAA Tournament first round series falling 14-1 to Northeastern State on Saturday afternoon. The series-deciding game will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. with the winner advancing as one of four teams to the double-elimination portion of the conference championship tournament next week in Warrensburg, Mo.
The RiverHawks (23-26) broke the scoreless game in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs and then scored in each of the next three innings, scoring one in the fifth, three in the sixth, and eight in the seventh to go up 14-0.
Cal Watkins recorded the Ichabods' (30-21) first hit of the afternoon in the sixth inning on an infield single. In the bottom of the seventh,
Easton Bruce hit a shot down the left field line that went inside the foul pole for a home run to spoil the shutout.
Northeastern State finished with 13 hits while limiting Washburn to two.
Rane Pfeifer (4-3) retired the first seven batters he faced, but was tabbed with the loss after going five innings and surrendering six runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
