TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn men's tennis began the 2023-24 season in Topeka at the Kossover Tennis Complex for day one of ITA Regional competition with several Ichabods advancing to day two.
At the end of day one the Ichabods will have six players remaining on the singles side of Flight A with Pavlos Parson, Tommy Cecchetti, Santiago Rendon, Matthew Earle, Sebastian Pjontek and Tim Hammes each winning two matches on the opening day to move into the round of 16.
Daniel Bird won his opening round match in Flight A but lost in the second while Daniel Harkin fell in the round of 64.
In Flight B for singles Graham Faris, Ivan Ivanov, Moritz Pieper and Mason Fair all won in the round of 32. Faris and Pieper won two-set decisions in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals while Ivanov and Fair both fell.
In doubles three duos from Flight A are moving on into the Round of 16. Daniel Bird and Sebastian Pjontek won 8-1, Matthew Earle and Pavlos Parson nudged out a 9-8(3) decision, and Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon breezed to a 8-1 victory. Tommy Cecchetti and Graham Faris fell 8-4 in the Round of 32 for Flight A.
In Flight B Moritz Pieper and Mason Fair won 8-3 in the opening Round of 16 while Daniel Harkin and Ivan Ivanov had a bye. In the Round of 16 Pieper and Fair fell 8-6 while Harkin and Ivanov came away with an 8-4 victory moving into the quarterfinals.
Quarterfinals and Round of 16 action will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday with matches running through the afternoon for Flights A and B singles and doubles along with consolation brackets for each side.
