TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn's Sebastian Pjontek became the first Ichabod ITA Regional Champion since 2017 and the third overall defeating teammate Santiago Rendon 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the ITA Small College Championships Oct. 12-15 in Rome, Ga.
In the championship match, Pjontek, the No. 6 overall seed, after taking the first set 6-4, fell behind 3-1 in the second set before cutting Rendon's lead to 3-2 with a break. Pjontek won another game to tie the score at 3-3 before Santiago held his serve to back up 4-3.
Pjontek held his serve to knotting the score at 4-4. Santiago and Pjontek each held their serves as the score moved to 5-5. Pjontek broke Santiago's serve to go up 6-5 and closed out the match at 7-5 ending the championships with an ace.
Pjontek joins Alejandro Valarezo (2017) and Ryan Ward (2009) as the only ITA regional champions.
To reach the championship match, Rendon had to beat fellow Ichabods Pavlos Parson 6-4, 7-6 (6) and Pjonkk used three sets to top Maksym Kulish from Nebraska-Kearney 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 as the Ichabods had three of the four players in the semifinals.
Winning the doubles championship was Alex Blanchar and Phil Exner from Ouachita Baptist defeated Cas De Ruiter and Teodor Zlatar from Harding 7-6(3), 6-4.
