JOPLIN, Mo. – The No. 13-ranked Washburn Ichabods remained unscathed in MIAA play with a 3-1 win over Missouri Southern on Friday night inside Leggett & Platt Athletic Center winning 25-11, 25-19, 24-26 and 25-17. Washburn face off with Central Missouri, who received votes in this week's AVCA national poll coming in at No. 27.
The Ichabods rolled in the opening set with the 25-11 win hitting .400 with 12 kills in 30 attacks with no errors while holding the Lions to a .061 mark. Washburn (9-1, 3-0 MIAA) led the Lions 10-9 before finishing the set on a 15-2 run closing out the set paced by
Jalyn Stevenson's four kills.
In set No. 2, trailed only at 16-15 before another closing run by Washburn of 10-3. Six different players had at least two kills for the Ichabods and
Corinna McMullen had three of her school-record-tying eight aces in the frame.
The Lions (8-4, 1-2 MIAA) cut the set lead to 2-1 after taking the third set 26-24 in a set that had five ties and three lead changes.
In the final stanza, Washburn was down 6-1 to start the set before tying the score at 9-9 before closing holding off the Lions with a closing run of 16-8 for the win.
Rachel Schwensen and
Austin Broadie had three kills each in the third set.
Stevenson led the Ichabods with 13 kills on 45 attempts and Schwensen finished with 11 kills on 33 swings with no errors. McMullen had 27 assists tying the school record adding 15 digs.
Taylor Rottinghaus had a match-high 20 digs.
The Ichabods hit .204 for the match holding the Lions to a .124 hitting percentage. The Ichabods also had nine blocks compared to four for the Lions. Washburn finished with 12 aces overall.
