TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn scored two goals in the first half Friday night and held on the final 45 minutes to defeat Fort Hays State 2-1 and end non-conference play with a five-match winning streak. The win was number 50 in head coach Davy Phillips' tenure at Washburn.
The Ichabods (6-1-0) struck early, with Viviana Soto-Herrera sinking her second goal of the season in the fourth minute of the match. Passes from Mackinly Rohn and Khloe Schuckman pushed the ball from the left corner of the field into the box and Soto-Herrera pushed it back into the left corner for the opening goal.
Washburn kept up its clean passing in the 39th minutes with Presslee Amick and Ana Muruzabal pushing the ball upfield to Aubrey Tanksley who was able to outrun the defense and punch the ball across from the right side of the field into the left side of the net.
Neither team was able to get off many shots in the match's final 45 minutes, the Ichabods attempted only one while the Tigers (4-1-2) took two. In the 64th minute Fort Hays State was able to get behind the Washburn defense and score on a breakaway to cut into the lead. That would be the final attempt of the night for the Tigers with the Ichabod defense tightening up the final 25 minutes to secure the win and give Fort Hays State its first loss of the season.
Both teams were active, each committing 16 fouls in the match. Five shots from Washburn in the first half accounted for nearly half of the 11 total shots in the match. No player for the Ichabods had more than one shot and 17 players took the field for at least 10 minutes in the match.
Raegan Wells made three saves for Washburn, playing all 90 minutes in goal. Jordan Tenpas, Lakin Rold and Josie Boyle played all 90 minutes in defense.
Allison Worley netted the goal for Fort Hays State while Isabel Robben made one save in goal, logging a full 90 minutes.
