EDMOND, Okla. -- Washburn women's tennis had it's run for an ITA Regional title end in the finals in doubles and in the semifinals on the singles side Sunday afternoon. Players who qualified advance to the ITA Cup in Rome, Ga. from Oct. 12-15.
Maja Jung began the day with a 7-6 first set victory in her semifinals match winning a the tiebreaker 7-3. Her opponent won the second set 6-2 to force a tiebreaking third set. In the tiebreaker Jung fell 10-3.
On the doubles side Jung and Lara Schmid won an 8-3 match in the semifinals of Flight A doubles. In the other semifinals match Isabella Martensson and Renske Ubachs lost 8-5 to set the other half of the finals match.
Jung and Schmid dropped the first set of the finals match against Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada of Central Oklahoma 6-3. They rallied to force a tiebreaker in the second set but came up short in the tiebreaker, falling 7-4 in it and 7-6 in the set to end the match.
In Flight B for doubles Peyton Koper and Cadence Lynn advanced to the finals after their scheduled semifinal opponent withdrew. In the finals the two stayed unbeaten with an 8-4 victory to win the Flight B doubles finals.
There will be a minimum of eight at-large selections for both singles and doubles spots at the ITA Cup that will be announced the week prior to the tournament.
